Setting the record straight . . .

I've read all 21 of the listed comments and many are either ridiculous or outdated. Some of the comments were so stupid, I could barely believe what I was reading.

LakeWood Apartments is not a perfect place to live but it's a reasonably decent one and the cost is reasonable as well. Are there problems? Yes. But my question for the whiners and complainers is this: Where is it perfect, whether you're a renter or an owner? When you find such a place, let me know and I'll move there!

LakeWood Apartments was built in the mid-1970s and it is what it is. If you do not like the architectural style of that era, then don't move there. The cottage cheese style of the ceilings reflects the 1970s and, yes, they used asbestos. The building mgmt tells you that and the lease states you shouldn't drill into the ceiling. The apt. sizes are generous compared with what's being built now and they're rent controlled (anything built after 1978 or so is NOT rent controlled). If you want to pay more for less, then go down to South Beach. The building colors are terra cotta, seafoam green and a soft yellow. Why is this tacky? It's not great but okay. What colors should the buildings be painted to suit more than 700 tenants? There is a mold issue and the management has worked to address this but tenants need to open windows and allow for air circulation. Again, it's a foggy area across from a lake and down the road from the beach. It's DAMP, folks. That's also why it feels cold some of the time. But this also depends on which direction your windows face. The lake side tends to be colder than the golf course side. I do agree that the windows, which are large, can be drafty and probably need to be replaced. At the same time, most of the apartments are very light and bright and enjoy nice views (again it depends on which direction your apartment faces).

The management staff rotates; some have been better than others. I've not had any problems with the management staff except for one manager several years back who was a sarcastic idiot and I told him so to his face. Generally, if you walk into the office with a good attitude, you will get a good response. My repair needs are always addressed promptly and generally correctly the first time around.

The halls have been repainted and all the carpets replaced in June 2005. In the last nine years, I've been all over this complex and have never seen a poorly lighted hallway. I do think the garages could be better lit, however. As far as theft and vandalism of cars is concerned, it is no higher here than anywhere else in the city. I formerly lived in Laurel Heights (for 8 years) and cars there were regularly stolen and/or vandalized. For the last 25 years, car theft has been the #1 non-violent crime in San Francisco.

We did have a rat problem a few years ago and they came from the Olympic Golf Course just behind LakeWood. The golf course is the source of a lot of problems. LakeWood responded as quickly as they could to this issue. The power problems were entirely PG&E's fault. The water issues are the responsiblity of LakeWood however and is an ongoing problem. Comcast has inherited the hodgepodge of installations done by their predecessors and it's a mess. The tenants association is run by people who think they know everything and I've gotten sick of them. The complex amenities, the lake and nearby beach are great and so is having my very own parking space. The noise problems are far less than they could be. The buildings are built very solidly and all the apartments have wall-to-wall carpeting. BTW, the murder referred to occurred on Sloat Blvd.; the tenant lived at LakeWood.
