Asbestos Forces More Families Out Of Homes Hotel & Meal Vouchers To Go To Displaced Tenants DENVER (CBS4) The Denver Department of Human Service will begin distributing hotel and meal vouchers to displaced tenants of the Highline Terrace Apartments Monday morning at the temporary American Red Cross shelter located at George Washington High School. Three apartment buildings undergoing renovation were evacuated Saturday after tests turned up asbestos dust. Approximately 300 units were evacuated Sunday due to possible asbestos exposure. There was no immediate estimate of when they could return. Highline Terrace Apartments is located in Denver at Leetsdale and Quebec. About two weeks ago, the state health department received a complaint of possible asbestos contamination at a 15-building complex that includes the three buildings, health officials said. Initial test results were positive for asbestos residue in hallways, stairwells and in debris from trash bins at the three buildings, although the results were below the state limit for allowable asbestos level. The state inspector nevertheless ordered the evacuations because of renovation work involving asbestos. Test results from the other buildings were pending. Denver's Municipal Animal Shelter was temporarily housing displaced pets. ( 2006 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
