Resident 2016 - 2018

7/25/2018

Originally, I was very pleased with Advenir as an apartment complex. My review was a solid 4 / 5 stars. Evidently I was wrong to evaluate it as such because the type of situation I am experiencing since my original review is absolutely horrific and most definitely illegal. After being a tenant here for 1 year and 6 months (never late on a payment) I decided to notify them that I would not be renewing my lease. 70 days before my lease was expiring, I went in, signed paperwork, and left a handwritten note explaining that I would not be renewing. I had decided to explore another area of the city since moving to Denver. I am a Web Developer and work with all types of clients, locally. One of my clients accompanied me to this appointment with Regina, the complex manager, and provided payment directly to the complex, prior to my exit. 30 days later I had gone into the complex attempting to look for sensitive business mail (customer payments and checks). None of my checks for my company were arriving. I had received confirmation from my clients that they were delivered but mysteriously, there was no mail for me. I also mentioned to Regina that I had found an apartment on the other side of town and had enjoyed my stay (at the time I was still unaware of the issues). She confirmed at this time that I was all set. A week before my lease expired, May 15th 2018, I moved out on May 1st and photographed the apartment in pristine condition, I detailed and cleaned the entire apartment and went in to drop off the keys. At this time I was sure that the rent had been paid 2 months ago when my client and I delivered the money. The complex had no record of my note or my signed apartment documents, only an original copy of the lease extension I signed that was about to expire. From there, they informed me that to "break the lease" I would have to pay them an additional $1400 USD. They wouldn't walk me through the apartment, nor would they acknowledged proof of my move out date. Regina was indifferent. Well, I have copies of the agreement still and I know it was signed. I left completely astonished at their level of disorganization and fraudulent activity. I asked that they drop the fees and provided a written letter stating that the maximum amount I was willing to pay was approx $700 dollars. They declined the payment and asked me to leave. At this point, one of the newer staff members saw what was going on and quit on the spot. Outside she told me they had been opening people's mail and trying to collect insane amounts off people who had given their notice as is expected. After hearing this I went inside and left another had written note to keep on my file (like I trust that at this point) which explicitly states that they are responsible for the alleged "misplacement" of my official documents. I asked if they had any of my mail and they said no, and said if I didn't leave now, they would call the police. A few days later I receive a call from a new employee there about a check they are holding at the office ($2500) which was made out to me back in February. I was baffled. When I went down, I claimed the check and took photos of them handing the it over. It was by itself, no longer sealed in the envelope. Consider yourself warned, I have it under reasonable suspicion that they had been opening my client sensitive documents. I called every single invoiced client for the last 6 months and said for them to check and secure their accounts from a potential data fraud. Some of them reported suspicious activity to their accounts. I have proof of all of this. Now, months later, I have a collections case on me for over $6100 USD which contains no specific breakdown of fees. It appears to me this complex is severely mismanaged and potentially criminal and dishonest. If they do not remove the charges, I will be taking them to court. Don't be fooled by these guys, this is as dirty as leasing gets. No honest complex has a lease agreement that thick. I will fight this to the end, class action lawsuit if I can, I know I am not the only one.
