I moved into MMA Lake Lanier 8 months ago. Not even a week after moving in my hot water heater broke, flooding my apartment. I called the office immediately. I was without hot water for days because there were issues fixing it. All they did to dry the water was put a fan into my unit that ran nonstop until the water was mostly dry before they took the fan. It took about two weeks for the water to be completely dry, before that my carpet was like a swamp, then it got sticky feeling. Ever since then I had been noticing mold in the apartment, the complex calls ā€œmildewā€. At first it covered organic materials such as my bags, shoes, clothes, bed, furniture, boxes, etc. Then I started to notice it on my kitchen supplies, and electronics, which is when I knew it was more than mildew. Itā€™s also been growing on the walls and a black goop is in all of the air vents, around the windows, and also around the door. I spent thousands trying to clean the mold buying expensive machines and cleaning supplies. I also got to the point of just throwing out everything with mold on it and replacing it. I did this three times before I stopped because it was just a cycle of me throwing things away, replacing them, just to have to do it again. My dog and I began to grow extremely ill. I had made calls to the complex to try and get someone out and nothing happened. I then proceeded to call corporate and tell them about how they told me my mold problem was mildew and I could not get anyone out to fix it, explained how Iā€™ve lost nearly all of my belongings and how it was making my dog and I sick. They said that they would send a maintenance man out immediately for an emergency work order. We hung up the phone and I got a call from a maintenance man, he asked me ā€œwhat is the emergency work order forā€ like he was not aware of why he was supposed to call and come to my apartment. I told him it was mold and he said ā€œokay Iā€™m on my way, I will be there in a few minutesā€. He never came, and I waited six hours. At this point my dog is worrying me because she had licked the mold off of the walls and was acting sicker than normal. Her and I left, me only grabbing two outfits straight out of the wash. I then called renters insurance for them to tell me they do not handle mold. About four days later we returned to check on the apartment and a maintenance man was about to walk into my apartment, with the key in hand. He asked me if I wanted to unlock the door so we can walk in together and I said, ā€œno you have a key ready to unlock the door just unlock itā€. So we walked in together and I showed him all of the mold. He said ā€œholy sh-t this is really bad, I need to leave and tell my boss.ā€ He left in a rush and I havenā€™t heard word since about the mold. I then sought help from a third party since I was getting no where with MMA itself. I had contacted Mold Law Group and spent thousands more on the mold issue at hand. They came out and tested the air and confirmed that I do indeed have toxic black mold in my apartment unit. They also said that the mold has probably been here well before I moved in and it was just covered up by paint. Which I find interesting because I found a Yelp review from someone in my same complex from 2019 who was also on the ground floor, has a similar terrible paint job and disgusting looking carpet, and her walls were COVERED in mold, almost exactly like mine. Additionally they told me that if my unit is as bad as it is the whole building is full of mold more than likely due to the way it spreads through the walls. The hot water heater busting just accelerated its growth by adding a new food source. I have been moved out for over three months now and have paid rent two of those months. I have stopped paying rent at this point because I do not live there and they have failed to provide a safe- habitable environment which is violating the lease on their part. Currently there is ā€œlegal actionā€ being taken against me, Kelly called from Office and was rude, they came in my apartment and tore things off my walls, and things were thrown around. Your safety is a joke to these people for multiple reasons.
