I agree that the apartments are in need of remodeling. My carpets were not clean when I moved in even though management said they were -- they smelled musty and I spent two months sweeping up large amounts of black cat hair. The laundry closet was not clean, and there were patched areas on the walls that were never sanded or painted. There are gaps in the kitchen tiles and the stove is so old it is golden rod yellow, the dishwasher is ancient, and the sliders have no seal at all. None of these things are enough to scare me away but for the amount of rent we pay I would have expected better, especially after the rent was raised $150.00 with the lease renewal and no negotiation. Period. The common areas in the buildings are not cleaned regularly, either, and there is always dog feces to watch out for, so even though the grounds appear nice, there is no where I want my child to play inside the complex. I do think that the apartment complexes in Columbia inflate their rents and work hard, as a group, to keep them inflated. If we had been more familiar with Maryland before we relocated here I would have moved to a more reasonably priced area where the schools are still good. As it is we will most likely stay here until our youngest graduates in 5 years but I am sure we will have to play the moving game when the rent goes up too much -- expect a 10% increase yearly. Make no mistake, management is congenial but it really is a facade, they want your money, no more, no less.
