Resident ā€¢ 2019 - 2020

9/23/2020

I'll start with the good: the location is wonderful and the courtyard is amazing and very convenient for late night dog duty. In my time here I have been locked in the elevator for half an hour, ignored when I emailed saying I would break my lease to get out of this place, left without AC in 90 degree weather for 5 days (considered an "emergency" according to their maintenance system), seen four building managers come and go, etc. Currently, there is a car that's been broken into in the garage. The shattered glass has been sitting there for at least four days. The hot water is out and since the "unit is from Italy" it will take a while to replace. We've been waiting on lights in the dimly lit, and frankly scary, garage for weeks. All residents' electronic keys failed during a city-wide curfew and did not start working for a week. Last week we had a fire alarm test from 1pm-3pm. Alarms were going off in the building and in individual apartments in the middle of the work day. When confronted by 8+ angry residents management claimed to have emailed everyone. No one got an email. Itā€¦Ā See More>

The service here is terrible. Maintenance requests go weeks without being answers, packages are left out and stolen, carpets are filthy, lights in public areas are burnt out, the staff turns over constantly, and as I'm writing this, the hot water has been out all day. Basically, nobody cares. This place tries to seem like a luxury building, and certainly charges as much, but they cut corners wherever possible. This is really disappointing. Do not live here.

      Resident ā€¢ 2019 - 2020

I moved in during 2019 - the space is beautiful and the apartments are not as expensive as others nearby. This is a good value mid-tier priced option. However, the management has been really really sub-par. The only person who has made me feel heard and supported in the last month or so is Tiffany - someone who is new to the building. She is an excellent leasing agent and puts the resident first. This is the magic touch that was missing before and I'm so glad she has finally made this feel more like a home. With her here, I would recommend new renters to consider living here.

I have lived in these apartments for over two years and for most of that I was very happy. They have recently lost nearly all of their employees due to new management. Now I can see why. Their management treats their residents like crap so I can only assume they treat their employees the same. The cable was turned off for months because they couldn't pay the bill, most of the furniture in the club room is broken, the exercise equipment is severely outdated, the hallways are always dirty with trash and even puke that will be there for days. I have heard the management make disparaging comments about ethnic people, single mothers and the reason that they don't keep up the property (they've already signed the lease so why try to make the place better.) I can't wait till my lease is up and I can get away from these horrible people whom have inflicted stress and emotional turmoil on me for the last few months.

DO NOT BE SWAYED BY THE POSITIVE REVIEWS ON HERE! Let me try to make this a objective as possible...I have never been mistreated nor am I a disgruntled resident trying to lash back at this apartment complex; however, I do want to help other prospective renters avoid the mistake that I made by having tunnel vision and focusing on all the glowing past reviews of this place, as they are quite outdated and things here have changed dramatically since many of those reviews were posted. First off, the staff at this place has more turnover than a college basketball team. This causes problems with consistency, experience, and problem resolution, which were not problems when I first moved in here. There seems to be a new person in the office just about every month. Management has also changed since many of these past reviews were posted. The new management here is inconsistent, unreliable, communicates poorly, and resorts to excuses before trying to understand what residents are saying. Once bubbly and willing to help and resolve just about any problem at whatever cost by going the extra mile and embracing flexibility, the management here no longer seems to be customer centric, butā€¦Ā See More>

Awesome place to live! Great units with great views. You could throw a tennis ball and hit the Stone Arch Bridge. Super close to the Guthrie and some awesome restaurants. A few feet from the best Farmers Market in the area. Caribou right across the street. What else do you need? Parking is easy as the building is new. Plenty of room to maneuver. Also, great parking across the street in the Portland Ramp for guests. The staff is also amazing. Always willing to help and go the extra mile. Maintenance gets done fast. Packages and dry cleaning are taken care of promptly. They are always willing to hear my (sometimes wacky) requests. Don't expect to wait long when waiting for a reply to a voicemail or email. Could not have been happier with the folks at MDCA! Did I mention there is a pool? And a hot tub? Not a lot of buildings in the city have these type of amenities. Great atmosphere with the indoor/outdoor areas. I was able to watch fireworks from my own terrace. I amā€¦Ā See More>

My husband and I moved to Mill District City Apartments in the spring of 2013 after living in the St. Louis Park for a few years. We wanted to be exposed a bit more to city life and the convenience of living downtown. We could not have been happier with our decision to live at MDCA and moved only because we bought a place a few blocks away. The property manager, Steve, is a wonderful asset to this complex and was always pleasant and professional to work with. Lastly, we really enjoyed living in such a pet friendly community and it was great that our dog was able to make many new "friends" in the neighborhood.

My name is Jimmy. I am a 50 year old man who has owned 4 homes and has rented in many places. I have lived in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Alaska, Missouri, Minnesota and several cities in Colorado. I was offered a job in Minneapolis and looked online for a place to rent. I was drawn to Mill District City Apartments. After I contacted the property and talked to Steve the manager, I signed a lease sight unseen. Not once have I regretted that decision, In fact, it is the best complex I have ever lived at. There is not even a close second place. Mill District City Apartments are simply awesome. Steve the manager is 'The Best'. He is totally a great human being as well as a professional. I have never said this about any property manager I have met in my life. Seriously, he rocks I could write a short novel on all my good experiences here, seriously. If you want to live right downtown in the smack of this great city, Mill District City Apartments is your best choice. What a great pleasant experience. In the spring of 2013, I was looking to move from suburbia to an urban location. My three main area's of focus were Uptown, the Mill District and North Loop in Minneapolis. After looking at a number of buildings in my price range, MDCA stood out at the best choice not only for it's location next to the historic Stone Arch Bridge and upscale, funky Guthrie Theater but the property has EVERYTHING a new urbanite could love as the staff are super friendly and professional and it's super close to the lighrail, off to the MOA I went during the cold winter months, not to mention the skyway system. The crew here at MDCA make everyone feel at home and in a neighborhood they can be proud to call "home". For a pet friendly building, it does not smell of "fido" at all. Big bonus! Yes, there are other choices for an urban lifestyle but since I have lived here, I have never been happier. Most residents are very respectful, pet friendly and fun. Happy hours and other community events put on through the property manager make this place homey. I have never regretted my decision to chooseā€¦Ā See More>

Overall, this is "ok" to live. I moved in when it first opened & they were still doing construction in part of my hallway. I moved in because I really liked the location & style of the place. The staff is very nice. I found the maintenance staff prompt in fixing items in my apartment. That said, the place was dirty in public areas. There were spills in the garage that didn't get cleaned for months at a time. The elevators were always dirty. The hallways were often not vacuumed for weeks & residents often left their trash in the halls too lazy to go to the chute - less than a minute walk. I did report several of these items & they were not addressed. The worst part, in my opinion, was the pool when the weather got warm. The place turned into a frat house. People playing music so loud I couldn't hear my own TV with door closed on the fourth floor. People tossing things over the balcony to friends. Lots of people that I do not think were residents in & out. As a previous review said, I once saw vomit in a public area. Iā€¦Ā See More>

MDCA is a great place to live, with access to the Light Rail only three blocks away and the Mississippi river only two blocks away you are only moments from the heart of Minneapolis. The amenities are good and the leasing staff is very kind, I will note that they have two GREAT maintenance persons who do a wonderful job. If you are relocation to the area this is a great place to meet new people, this is easier if you have a dog as the building is a dog friendly place.

Nice Apartments, but Shadowy Happy Hours

First of all, I think MDCA is a fine apartment building. A little noisy perhaps, but if you want total quiet I suppose a nursing home might be your best option. My first (and hopefully only) gripe is the happy hour. They advertised a happy hour, but I showed up and it was like Deadwood (sans tumbleweed). Come on MDCA!!! I demand satisfaction!!! Anyways, please don't take this review too seriously. Also, it seems like there are a lot of haters (competitors perhaps) in this joint. Cheers.

                            Disappointed...

When I first visited this complex, I was quite impressed with the general d cor of the property, amenities, and apartment itself. However, as the months passed, my impression changed. My biggest complaint about this property is the noise. The apartment has minimal sound proofing. When my neighbor turns on his television/sound system, my living room wall vibrates. It is even worse when my neighbor returns home after bar close and continues to party into the early hours of the morning with the bass cranked, laughing, and yelling. (I felt like I was living in a dorm at times.) Hallway noise is also noticeable, whether it is people talking or dogs barking. No matter what, I am paying way too much money listening to my neighbors. On a positive note, the location is great, especially in the summer. Other tenants are friendly. Overall, I did not have any safety concerns. I cannot comment on the office staff, as I really did not have to deal with them, because I did not have any maintenance issues. The stairwells remind me of what Section 8 housing would look likeā€¦Ā See More>

                              Highly Regulated Lifestyle for Rent

If you're looking for an overpriced, poorly managed apartment building then this is the place for you! Dog poop in the hallways? Check. Vomit in the elevators? Check. Constantly broken amenities that take months to fix? Double check. If you're looking to have something taken care of or hoping for a quick response to an inquiring, don't even bother with management or the front office. "The Office is open until 6:00pm." Sure, if by "open" management means lights off and doors locked. Note that in addition to the high cost of rent, tenants are required to pay all utilities and by all I mean electric, gas and even water. Each unit is individually metered for water and monthly costs in my opinion seem to be pretty inconsistent. I don't think the building is very safe either when not just tenants but the office staff gladly let unknown visitors into the building. Sure, the building looks nice from the outside, and even sometimes from the inside. But that sauna may start on fire (more than once), the outdoor grill may be broken for months and the hot tub in need of a newā€¦Ā See More>

MDCA is a sweet place to live if you can afford it. Hot tub, sauna, pool, hardwood floors, own washer/dryer, AC, middle of downtown, underground parking... need I say more? It's expensive but worth it for me. My only gripe is that the walls are a little thin to the hallways, but it isn't too bad as to make me not want to live here.

Overall, I have been satisfied with the Mill District City Apartments. The staff is very friendly and willing to stop what they are doing to help out. Common areas are generally clean and organized and any major issues seem to be taken care of in a timely fashion. I will say the in-unit washer/dryer are rather noisy as is the HVAC unit (especially air conditioning). It makes it near impossible to enjoy anything in the living room (watching TV, talking on the phone, etc.)

It is one of the few nice dog friendly buildings in downtown. Do not move here if you don't like dogs! It is a nice community. I actually know, greet and hang out with my neighbors and people show up for the resident happy hour (unlike other places I have lived). The units are beautiful and comfortable to live in! The one complaint I have is that we were promised things before we moved in that never happened like an off- leash area for the dogs and that they keep switching staff around to much.

                                      Mill District Apartment Living Review

I love living in the Mill District Building. It's hip, fun, safe, clean and convenient. My room was freshly painted before moving in and the building always looks great. Here are a few suggestions to make it even better: - Consider putting a key fob scanner (like you have out front) in the elevator. It would increase the level of safety to have our residents have to scan their key fob before they're able to select a floor. It worries me a bit that when entering the garage it's a downhill slope so you cannot see if anyone came in through the garage door behind you. If you had a key fob scanner in the elevator, no one would be able to get up into the building without a resident present. - Consider having a concierge on duty every night into the late hours. Weekends especially! I came back to the building around 1:30 one evening to a homeless man sleeping on the lobby couch. I woke the gentleman up to see if he lived there and he said he did not and then left the premise. - Consider having pet only/ no pets allowed floors. Dogs barking in the early morningā€¦Ā See More>

The quality of all public areas (indoor and outdoor) are superior....some of the best I have seen. Marissa and Stephen are tremendously professional and extremely courteous. The garage needs a good scrubbing......not sure why it is so dirty and it has clearly not been cleaned since the building opened. The quality of the construction and appointments in the actual apartments is "average" and the insulation (noise control) between units is below average (and I am confident you have heard this before specific to this and other properties).

Great Location and Great Management, with awesome amenities!

We moved in to Mill District Apartments shortly after it opened in Janurary of 2011. We enjoy that there is a major bus stop right in front of the building, and that it is 1/2 a block away from the Mississippi and West River Parkway! We pay an arm and a leg for rent but it is worth it considering the staff that maintains the property are very professional and timely, and the amazing club room, pool, sauna, and workout room are always open! We like the security the building provides and love that we live in such a pet friendly environment. Dan has been particularly helpful in anything we ask of him. He is a true professional!

                                              excellent place to live

I have been living here for about 8 months and love it. Excellent building. Problems are solved quickly, staff are very pleasant and helpful, wonderful community to be a part of. I love my apartment. No it is not the cheapest building in town, but you get what you pay for, and utilities are very low and the location on the outskirts of downtown is very convenient for just about anything you need or want to do.

I have lived here for 6 months. I love the location it is convenient for me to walk to most anything I would need. The amenities are nice and well kept. On cold winter days when I don't want to venture outside they provide a nice repreve from my apartment. My only complaint would be the nose. I can hear my neighbors vacuum, TV, music ect.... Even louder is the noise in the hallway. I am across from the stairwell and elevator; i can hear everything and so can my dog. At times I can overlook this, but it is difficult when I am trying to sleep and what sounds like 10 rowdy people are standing right outside my door.
