My wife and I continue to live in The Aventine for over 4 years now, renting two apartments while our house is getting built. This is in spite of some significant issues here, three of which are living in a community of dogs instead of human beings, little or no security and the high noise level. However, the latest issue takes the cake and is a life threatening safety hazard. In the past years, I have always escaped the winter in Asheville and was not aware of the state of affairs in The Aventine. This year, I had to stay back to endure the surprisingly harsh winter here. What do I see at The Aventine?? Ice and snow on roads, walkways, staircases, hallways and even on my doorstep! I am in Building 1000, perhaps the worst affected due to its high location. With the latest storm, I have struggled to walk up to my 2nd floor apartment with or without bags in my hands, slipping on the slick steps and unable to hold the railings because they too are covered with ice. There is no sign of any one from management or maintenance doing anything about it. I checked if there were any rules / regulatiions in Buncombe County requiring landlords to keep their properties and surroundings clean of snow / ice and could not find any. So no doubt, management / owners have no reason to do anything. The residents are on their own to protect themselves, i.e. until someone gets injured and sues the owners. The root cause of this is very obvious which of course management does not agree with for obvious reasons. The Building is seriously flawed in its design. Who in their right mind would design a building in a mountain setting with open access, open hallways, no doorways? Flournoy Properties of course! I have visited numerous rental properties in the area and not one has a totally open and insecure access as The Aventine. Result? Stolen packages from the door front replaced by snow. Hopefully my wife and I will not have to endure this next holiday and winter season.
