Not A Bad Place But They Will Nail You On The Move-Out

My wife and I lived here for three years, paid our rent on the first every month, and eventually decided to move out. We had no complaints about our apartment or the area, and enjoyed our time there enough to talk three or four friends into moving there during our tenure. Of course, that all changed when we moved out. Some months after we moved out, we got a nasty phone call from one of the managers, basically calling us deadbeats and telling us we owed $2000, we had two weeks to do anything about it, or they were sending it to collections. They were very aggressive right up until we presented them with everything we'd gotten on move-out, i.e. the inspection sheet, the old checks showing we paid per the figures they quoted us, the written sheet with the figures they quoted us, and so on. Silence, for a while. Then, it turned out we only owed them $1000. How silly of them! I asked if they could provide a written, itemized list of what we owed them, especially if it was for damages to the apartment, since we already had the sheet from our move out saying what we owed (far less than $1000), as well as the deposited check that showed we'd paid that, too. Silence, for a while. Then they told us, okay, we only owed $500 for unspecified additional move-out fees. I pointed out that this didn't show up anywhere on any of the written stuff I had, nor did it show up in the copy of the lease, which I still had, so I wasn't inclined to pay it, and they finally slunk away. I consulted with some of my friends who'd moved out and, amazingly, they'd all had the same thing happen to them. Sometimes it was "damages" or "cleaning fees", but, curiously, the amounts all seemed to be about the same, and they'd just had the misfortune of not keeping every single scrap of paperwork the way I do. I also never got an apology or anything for being called a deadbeat, which was kind of insulting when I was obviously being scammed. So feel free to live here, but for god's sake, take lots of pictures on move in and move out, keep copies of everything, and never throw away the paperwork.
