One month in...

We moved into Korman-Village Square, a little under a month ago (8/11), and so far we ve had what I ll call a few issues - beginning ominously by having our move-in date pushed back a week after being informed of renovation delays (specifically, our kitchen cabinets were backordered). I will admit I was a little upset, because we were told that by putting down the security deposit (in advance, mind you) it ensured everything would be ordered. It might not seem like a big deal, but having to re-arrange the start date of your insurance coverage, your moving truck and your helpers is a bit of an inconvenience. Not to mention that we couldn t get return phone calls in reference to the status of our cabinets (since we were told we might have to delay again, apparently move-ins being a fluid situation), but when they thought we hadn t paid the deposit (which we had), the township fee (again, in advance) and supplied proof of insurance (twice) we of course did get phone calls wondering about that. I think the issue boiled down to some communication issues within the office, especially since the person we initially were dealing with went on vacation in the interim, which left us in a void with people who had no idea who we were or what we were talking about. However, once she came back everything went smoothly and to her credit she really took care of the situation. But I digress. You can tell the renovation really was a rush job (probably because we were complaining about the possibility about being pushed back ANOTHER week), because they is a lot of over paint on the new fixtures and knobs and all the walls and window sills were still tacky and the air-conditioner didn t work AT ALL. Again, a non-issue usually, except we couldn t open the windows at all because, due the heavy rain that particular Sunday and clogged gutters, our windows flooded with several inches of water whenever opened. This also led to the latex-based (i.e.: wrong) paint on the window sills to come completely off. Called the emergency Maintenance number (again, ominous on the day you move in) who deemed this a non-emergency, was rude and outright refused to come out that day (of course, he wasn t the one who had to sweat it out). When a (different) guy game out on Tuesday (earthquake day) (not Monday), he promptly cleared our gutters (thankfully 3 days before Irene) and fixed the A.C. and was nice and professional. I was going to ask him to repaint the window sills since it all peeled off because of the water flood from the windows, but I was just happy I could open the windows at all and I ll just do it myself and use the right paint. However, when Irene ripped off the floodlight and gutter, they did come out the next day and take care of it, so there is that. Some other things the parking lot of our court FLOODS with any heavy rain literally, like FEET not inches. A few of our neighbors cars were flooded up to the dash during the last storm, but anyone who has lived here more then one storm should know that the lot floods, since we noticed it the day we moved in (so note, if you move in, park on the higher grounds during the rain). A few are suing (they say) and, although it s really no ones fault, Korman should put signs up that say this area floods or better drainage or something. Parking itself is questionable after 6pm, fills quickly, but there are usually some spots within a short distance away. That being said there would be more if there weren t construction dumpsters taking up several spots, which have been here since we moved in. I have noticed some spots of broken car window glass, not really sure how long it's been there or if it is from a break-in, but either way not encouraging. And it's still there, clean it up at least. Car break-ins happen anywhere, and I believe it's your fault if you leave your stuff accessible and visible, but still worth mentioning I don't leave anything of real value in my car. People who have dogs pretty much walk them everywhere and not really pick-up but I have to say they do keep the grounds very well kept around the whole complex. No trash, good lighting, nothing overgrown. And although it s right of Street Road, its VERY quiet within the complex and I can t complain about any of our neighbors, and I do feel safe here. Washer/dryer in unit are small but manageable (read the directions people, you have to add a little water to the discharge and stuff drys great) and the only other gripe I can say about our apartment is the kitchen ventilation fan above the stove literally discharges into the cabinet above- not outside- so it s kind of useless for clearing out kitchen smoke. Got a $22 electric bill, without using the A.C., for 10 days of use. Not promising.
