The idea of online grocery shopping as a substitute for driving to your local supermarket to get food may seem odd at first. You might buy a few things here and there, but you can’t imagine getting all or most of what you need through a website. That’s exactly what thousands of online shoppers do weekly, monthly or quarterly, and they’ve decided for many reasons not to step foot in their area grocery store again. The benefits of online grocery shopping override most of its disadvantages, so much so that you may change your shopping habits as well.
1 – Delivery to Your Door
Online grocery items are delivered right to your doorstep. On very few occasions will you have to pick up a delivery at the local branch of the Post Office, UPS or FedEx pickup centers. You don’t have to sign for packages in most cases, and it’s left on your doorstep or property manager’s office if you’re not home. This saves you a trip to and from the grocery store, or the need to find the time to go shopping in the first place. You don’t have to worry about waiting in traffic if you live in a busy metro area, or traveling to the nearest town center if you live in a rural area.
2 – Fast Comparison Shopping
Trying to find the best deals between grocery stores is time consuming and you’re bound to miss things. You often need a subscription to the local newspaper to get a sales flyer for each store. Otherwise, you’ll have to travel to each store to pick them up the day it’s made available, and of course each store puts a flyer out on a different day. Then, you’ll have to get to the stores early enough before quantities of really good buys run out, which can result in multiple trips to the stores in a week. Avoid this hassle by comparing prices from the comfort of your apartment. Websites such as Amazon.com and NexTag.com offer a range of prices from various sellers at a glance, and you can arrange prices from the lowest to highest. Google also shows three stores in its search results, with the price, when you submit the name of the product you’re looking for as a search term.
3 – Large Quantities
Grocery stores limit the quantities of each item they carry. If you like to have most of what you need on hand for more than a month, then online grocery shopping is for you. Case lots and other large quantities are available when ordering online, and you’ll often get discounts for ordering more at a time. For example, if you love a particular brand of chili in a can, look online for cases of 12, 24 or 48 and order as many as you’ll eat in 3 months or more. Local grocery stores may not stock more than 6 or 12 cans at a time, and you won’t get a discount for buying as many as they have.
Some buyers order organic produce and other “fresh” online grocery items. However, you can supplement your shopping online by going to your local farmer’s market, produce stand, farm share or shopping at the supermarket if you prefer.
