When it comes to holiday decorating, there really are no rules — but it never hurts to have a little inspiration at your disposal. If you’re stuck trying to figure out how to decorate your doors and doorways this holiday season, look no further. Try these three fun holiday door decorating ideas to bring some warmth to your space and wow all your guests.

Cover Your Doors in Crafts

If you really want to go all out with holiday door decorating this year, consider covering the entire door. This can be done with cardboard paper, craft paper, and even wrapping paper! Already have a theme in mind for your holiday decor? Covering your door to create a fun, unique holiday-themed scene is a great way to let it shine.

If you’re still not settled on a theme, that’s okay! Consider the following ideas:

— Nativity scene

— Santa Claus

— Menorah for Hanukkah

— Kinara for Kwanzaa

— Christmas countdown calendar

— Snow globe

— Outdoor winter scene

— Snowflakes

— Christmas tree

— Fireplace scene

— Santa and reindeer

— Elves

Some tools you may need for holiday door decorating include colorful crafting paper, bows, markers, stencils, rulers, and wallpaper/door safe tape. Just make sure you have a clear plan before you start buying materials. Draw a rough sketch of what you want to do, jot down some color ideas, measure the dimensions of your doors, and consider any weather limitations. With just a little planning, you’ll have no problem crafting an unforgettable holiday-themed door for your home.

Decorate with Wreaths

Wreaths are one of the most popular holiday door decorating items, and for good reason. They come in all sizes and designs, but you can also make your own if you can’t find a pre-made wreath to match your decorating theme. Craft and dollar stores sell plain, ready-to-decorate wreaths at reasonable prices. These wreaths are usually made up of fake green plants or tree branches. If you look hard enough, you can even score a non-traditional colored wreath.

Once you pick out a wreath, you can buy decorative picks, bows, and ornaments at your local craft or dollar store. You’ll want to hot glue these into the wreath to make sure they stay, but loosely place them all where you’d like to have them before you start gluing. That way you aren’t committed to anything and have more flexibility with assembling the finished product.

Make sure you have a wreath holder that goes over your door, too. These are the most secure and don’t cause damage to your doors.

Don’t Be Afraid to Keep It Simple

If you aren’t feeling super crafty this holiday season, don’t worry! Consider gathering a bunch of small craft items that stick to your doors for hassle-free decorating.

If your door has any windows, you can decorate using cute, ready-to-use window clings. These are cheap, easy to install, and are a fan favorite in the holiday decorating community. Even better, they’re easy enough to put up with your kids. Have them place the clings how they want, and give them a fun activity you can do together.

Another idea is to use Christmas lights. You may need to get creative with how they will be lit up, but it can be done pretty easily to dazzling effect. If you want to do this, just make sure the doorway is still safely accessible afterwards, and that no cords are in the way.

Finally, you can mix and match ideas. Work in some craft paper or cling wraps and throw up a wreath to make your own unique holiday door decor. Have some ideas of your own? Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. Decorating for the holidays should be fun and fit your style.

Have Fun Decorating, and Happy Holidays!

Table full of craft supplies and DIY holiday decorations.

The holidays bring people together, and holiday door decorating is part of the joy that this season brings. Plan a day where you can decorate with family and friends to make it even more special, and consider decorating multiple doors. You aren’t limited to your front door, after all! Go all in, and decorate bedroom doors, closets, and even cabinets if you want.

Even if you’re renting your place, it’s still okay to decorate your doors and cabinets. Ask your landlord what is and isn’t okay to double-check, and prioritize safely decorating without ruining any hardware or wood. There are tons of renter-friendly adhesives and hangers out there — you may just need to take some extra time to find them.

We hope you enjoy this holiday season and have a blast decorating your doors!
