3 Tips for Home Office Organization

Home office organization is the key to successfully working at home. Whether you work full-time from your office or just use it now and then to complete paperwork or pay bills, an organized space will make it easier to use, reducing the amount of time you must spend there. Keep your office organized by separating it from other parts of your house, designating spaces for different types of paperwork and regularly filing away older papers.

1. Separate Your Office

Whether you can spare a desk, table or merely a file folder, setting aside a portion of your home as an office makes that space only usable as an office. This keeps you from getting distracted from the piles of laundry or dishes, cooking or other tasks that need to get done in addition to your work.

2. Separate Paperwork

Create specific places for different types of paperwork. Bills, to-do lists, documents that should be filed away and other paperwork should be separated by type and placed in different areas. Invest in dividers, file folders or cabinets to keep papers separate. Knowing where to go for what you need will reduce the amount of time spent looking for things, thereby increasing the amount of time you can dedicate to productive work.

3. Separate Old Papers

Invest in a good file cabinet or at least a box to file papers that you do not need very often. At the same time once a week, file away old papers as appropriate. Regularly cleaning your desk of old, unnecessary papers will prevent it from becoming cluttered.
