Making breakfast in bed for your loved one is a sweet gesture of the depths of your affection. However, some breakfasts are even more romantic or impressive than others. While the effort may be more important that the results, it’s better to demonstrate just how much effort you put into the gift in order to impress your loved one.
1. Setting Up the Bed
Breakfast in bed is meant as a time to relax, especially if the one you’re making it for usually makes breakfast for him or herself. Therefore, you should devote some time to setting up the environment. Add extra pillows to the area so the one who’s dining can sit up comfortably and not against a hard bed headboard or wall. If you’re also eating, don’t forget to set pillows up for you, too. In case of spills, you might consider asking your loved one to get up a moment so you can lay out a comfortable old blanket you don’t mind being stained. Make sure it’s soft to sit on.
2. Finding the Right Serving Tool
Breakfast in bed can be romantic, relaxing or both—or it can be a recipe for disaster. You want to to give your loved one a large dining area so that he or she isn’t uncomfortable trying to eat without spilling. A larger serving platter will also display the extent of the efforts to which you’ve gone to make the meal. Also, you don’t want the serving tray to have to rest directly on your loved one’s legs (as it’s uncomfortable) or even directly on the bed (as it’s a spilling hazard) if you can help it.
While putting a table next to the bed may be one solution, an even better solution (so your loved one doesn’t have to keep turning to grab his or her food) is a breakfast in bed serving tray, which is slightly raised and can slide comfortably over the legs. If you don’t want to buy one, you can also serve it on a portable laptop desk, which will also raise the food.
3. Making the Best Breakfast
There is no one perfect breakfast recommendation for your experience, as everyone’s tastes differ. What’s important is that you know what your loved one likes. Just be sure that you offer a variety of options, such as a cereal, oatmeal and/or grits as well as some fresh fruit in addition to the usual pancakes, waffles, bacon and/or sausage your loved one might enjoy. But don’t forget to think out of the box!
If your loved one really enjoys studying another culture or traveling, you may want to make a typical breakfast served in his or her favorite foreign country. Some Asian cultures usually have fish dishes, rice and salad in the morning, for example, and your adventurous loved one may appreciate the extra effort you’ve gone to in order to try something out of your comfort zone.
Remember that breakfast in bed is as much about the experience as it is about the food. Creating a relaxing experience for your loved one—or to share with your loved one—can be just as important as what you serve.
