4 Mistakes When House Training a Puppy

Staff Writer · Mar 25, 2010

If you’re currently working at house training puppy, then you not only need to know what to do but what not to do if you’re going to be successful in accomplishing your goal with respect to teaching your dog to go outside. Avoid making the following four mistakes and you’ll be able to successfully complete you objective in this regard.

Mistake #1 – Delaying the Inevitable or Procrastinating in Taking your Puppy Outside

Make sure you take your puppy on regularly scheduled trips outside about every two hours, especially if he’s exceptionally active. After he’s been house trained, he’ll probably need to be routinely taken out about three times a day. If you own a small dog, then you’ll probably need to take him out more often. Therefore, don’t delay the inevitable and procrastinate when it comes to taking your dog outside. Make it a habit to allow your pup to take care of business fairly frequently. One way to keep on schedule is to make sure you feed him at the same times each day. Wait for about 40 minutes after he’s finished eating before taking him out.

Mistake #2 – Punishing Your Puppy for Eliminating in the House When You’re Not There

Probably the biggest mistake dog owners make when it comes to house training their dog is to punish him for doing his business after he’s already made the mistake. Don’t scold him as he won’t understand why you’re upset. If you didn’t see him doing his business, then you weren’t monitoring him closely enough. By punishing him, you’ll only make him feel scared to do his business outside in your presence. You simply can’t admonish him for something he doesn’t understand or because you weren’t keeping a careful watch over him.

Mistake #3 – Not Rewarding Your Puppy When He Does as He’s Told

If you want your puppy to stay motivated with respect to house training, then you also need to show him that you’re pleased when he does as he’s told. Therefore, reward your canine friend with special treats such as pieces of cheese or chicken. These types of treats are better than offering him a mundane treat such as a dog biscuit for good behavior. By giving him extra tasty treats, he’ll be more inclined to please you and choose to do his business, as he should, outside.

Mistake #4 – Make Sure You Continue to Walk Your Puppy after He’s Done with His Business.

Don’t make the mistake, as many dog owners do, and immediately take your puppy inside the house after he’s done his business. Most dogs enjoy the amount of time they’re allotted outside; as a result, your puppy may retort by stubbornly refusing to go until he’s good and ready. Therefore, when he does finally go, reward him with a special treat and allow him to walk for a while as an additional incentive for a job well done.

Keep the above tips in mind when house training puppy and you’ll avoid a number of hassles when it comes to the task.
