When it comes to creative family room design, the big secret is no secret at all: Keep it simple and functional. This doesn’t mean you have to give up on making it look stylish. You can combine functionality and style in a room design that compliments the personality of your family. Here are 4 ideas for family room decorating.
1. Get Rid of the Television
One secret to a creative family room design is removing the television. Too often, the television becomes the focal point of the room instead of the family members. Take the opportunity to revisit the use of television in that space when you’re planning your room makeover. Replace the wall or entertainment center space it takes up with your children’s artwork, family pictures, learning posters, books or wall games. You may be delighted to see the conversations and spontaneous play that takes place with that one simple act.
2. Use Colorful Storage Solutions
Storage bins, baskets and mobile drawers can add style to your family room design and help to keep the area clean and safe. You can use color codes for where you want to store particular items. For example, rather than label a storage bin “toys”, you can train young children to put their toys away in the purple basket. You can also purchase a storage unit that has mini cubicles in it with a hard top for sitting. This can provide additional seating that can be decorated with cushions and can serve as a great reading area for you and your children.
3. Include a Computer Area
A creative family room design idea is to add a computer area. If your room makeover is more of a contemporary look, you can use a metallic desk with a black leather chair to keep the modern decor. If your family room decorating reflects a country living theme or another more “homey” decor, a wooden desk and brown office chair looks great. You can set up the computer and related equipment, such as a printer and speakers, in that one area. This is a great place to put your computers if you want to keep them out your children’s bedrooms and in your sight. If you have more than one computer, simply place two desks back to back, or side by side, depending on your space.
4. Use End Tables, not a Coffee Table
You should do as much as you can to leave a lot of space in the middle of your family room, especially if you have young children. This will give them the opportunity to run, jump and skip in the space without hurting themselves. Even older children and teens will enjoy laying on the floor to read or play board games. If you need a small table in the room, use end tables instead. Set them close to one or both arms of the couch. You can also cover it with a small cloth or a small accessory to compliment the design of your room.
These are just a few family room design ideas that will keep it looking great. Beyond the style and function of your family room, using these strategies will provide great opportunities for you and your family to bond.
