4 Things You Shouldn’t Do around Your Christian Roommates

Staff Writer · Mar 12, 2010

There can be some drawbacks to having Christian roommates, if you yourself have an opposing lifestyle. It is possible that your lifestyle choices may offend them. Here are four things you shouldn’t do around them.

1. Swearing

Swearing in front of your Christian roommate is likely to offend them. Generally, Christians don’t use bad language, or include “God” or “Jesus” in a nonreligious manner. Doing so once will probably lead to them asking you not to speak like that around them. The roommate might be less quick to want to spend time with you, to go places with you and such.

2. Lying

Christians always try to live by the saying “Honesty is the best policy”. Telling lies is something that a Christian tries to refrain from, and as your roommate, they will expect the same from you.

3. Sleepovers

Christians tend to believe that sex should be participated in only after marriage. Bringing a girlfriend or boyfriend home for the night will likely make them uncomfortable.

4. Drugs

While a person doesn’t have to be a Christian to be against drugs, it is likely that your Christian roommate will be against even the legal forms of drugs. Alcohol and smoking might not be approved of by your roommate. While no person should have to put up with the illegal forms of drugs, the cigarettes and alcohol could be a compromise. Taking the cigarettes outside on the patio instead of lighting up inside. Limit the amount of beers you drink in front of the roommate. By respecting them, they will be more eager to give you your space.

Christians try and live their lives the way God has instructed. As a roommate, you are allowed to live the way you choose, but trying to refrain from activities known to be against their belief system will cut down the amount of awkwardness. Creating a healthy and comfortable living environment is something both tenants want. It is not a requirement to live the way they live, but it is common practice to be respectful of another person’s beliefs.
