Closet organization is critical when living in a small space, apartment, or really anywhere with limited closet space. Here are some easy closet organization strategies to help maximize your minimum closet space.
1 – The Over-the-Door Hanging Shoe Rack
Cheap, easy, and completely worthwhile is a hanging show rack. Usually made of plastic or vinyl, over-the-door hanging shoe racks can be found at virtually any store that sells stuff for the home. No real set-up is required. Simply remove the shoe rack from the packaging, slip on the hooks to go over your closet door, and hang it up – it’s that simple!
Over-the-door shoe racks will usually give you 20 pockets for shoes, so that works out to 10 adult pairs. For a kid’s closet, you may be able to fit one pair in each pocket. If your children share a room, that’s great. You can fit all of their shoes on one shoe rack! If there are any extra pockets be sure to make use of them. Store scarves, gloves or other accessories in the extra pockets.
2 – The Coat Rack that is Not for Coats
Who said a coat rack can only be used for coats? Hang a coat rack or two on the side walls of your closet. Use the knobs for handing up belts, hats, ties or scarves. If you have a favorite sweater that you wear around your apartment when it’s chilly, hang it up here too for easier access. Coat racks are easy to install and inexpensive. Just screw them in, and you’re done!
3 – Extra Shelving for Extra Organization
If you are one of those people that just does not have a lot of hanging clothing, you probably are also one of those people that is always in need of extra drawer space in your dresser. Hanging shelves are the perfect solution to your problem. Again, these are inexpensive, and require virtutally no set-up. Simply remove the shelves, which come as an accordion, from their packaging, attach the hook and hang them up. Hanging shelves will provide about 6 shelves for your closet. Use the shelves for sweaters that you’ve been stuffing in your drawers, or place a decorative basket on the shelves for undergarments or socks.
4 – Create Space and Organization with a Trouser Rack
Hanging trousers or pants from separate hangers all stacked next to each other takes up a lot of space. A trouser rack, however, opens up your closet space. A trouser rack is like hanging multiple pairs of pants from one hanger without creating bulk or creases. Look for one that hangs the pants vertically for maximum space saving and organization. Trouser racks may hold anywhere from 10 pairs of pants to 25 pairs of pants, so they are worth every penny.
5 – Make Use of the Top Shelf of Your Closet
The top shelf of a closet is usually too high up to be reached by the average person, so it is either under-used, or really messy. Make use of this space with plastic storage bins. Store away your out of season clothes in the the bins, and place them on the top shelf of your closet. Getting these clothes out of your drawers will free up tons of room.
