Renting furniture instead of purchasing furniture is a good idea for most apartment dwellers. If you’re weighing the pros and cons of renting over purchasing, consider these solid reasons for renting instead of buying:
1 – You Won’t Have to Move It
Many apartments are just temporary residences for students, people just moving into an area, people between houses, people working new jobs or people living abroad. Rented furniture needn’t come with you when you move in or out of your apartment. The company from which you rent will deliver the furniture to your new place and they will take the furniture away when you end the rental agreement so that you don’t have to worry about transporting it if you move again.
2 – Furnish Entire Rooms Quickly
Another reason why renting furniture makes sense if your apartment is a short-term living arrangement or you have to move in on short notice is that you can rent entire rooms worth of furniture in package deals from most furniture rental companies. Rather than wasting time picking out couches, chairs, coffee tables, TV cabinets and electronics for your living room, for example, you can rent a pre-coordinated set of living room furniture for a flat rate and have the furniture ready as soon as you move in.
3 – “Try Before You Buy”
Whether your life in your apartment is for the short-term or a more permanent move, renting furniture allows you to “try before you buy.” If there’s a particular piece of furniture or even any electronics you’re considering purchasing, you can rent them for a month or two before you buy them. While it’s true that many stores have return policies if you don’t like an item, it can be a hassle to return a large item-plus you won’t have a very long period in which to do so before you forfeit at least some of the money you spent. Save money by making sure you enjoy the furniture or electronics first by trying them out for a longer period.
4 – The Freedom to Redecorate
If someone who has bought furniture gets bored with the decor, it’s not a simple task to sell or donate the old furniture and then purchase entirely new furniture to replace it. It’s also quite a waste of money. When renting furniture, you can switch to another item or another entire room set whenever your contract allows. This means that you can switch out your room’s decor every year, every 6 months or perhaps even once a month, and let the rental company worry about moving furniture in and out of your apartment.
5 – You Can Rent-to-Own
If you do want to keep your furniture for the long-term, but you simply don’t have the money to furnish your entire apartment, you can enter a rent-to-own program, which requires that you make a small monthly payment toward the ultimate goal of owning the furniture. This is extremely convenient for those who can afford small monthly payments but not $5000 all at once, for example. Just be aware that in the long term, you’ll most likely be paying more for the furniture this way than you would by purchasing it outright.
When you consider all of these reasons, renting furniture makes sense, especially if you live in apartment. Just make sure that you’re not going to be spending considerably more in the long-term than you would to buy furniture outright.
