Renting a room is a wise choice in many situations. However, before renting a room, there are a number of things that you want to take into consideration. A room rental situation can be for weeks, months or even years. The more effort you make to create a happy situation for yourself in renting the room, the more likely you are to be comfortable in your new, rented room.
1. Initial Research
Check out the price for studio and one-bedroom apartments in the area where you are moving. People renting out a room sometimes list those rooms for more than the going rate for one’s own apartment, as they hope to entice renters unfamiliar with the area who think they are getting a good deal. Stay clear of this trap by making sure you are getting a good rate. If you can get your private apartment for the same amount of money, you may just want to do that, or keep looking for a more reasonable room for rent.
2. Decision Making Tips
Decide if you are renting a room to save money or because you are looking for a little something extra that an apartment wouldn’t offer, such as roommates, amenities or other perks that people renting rooms sometimes receive. If you are renting a room in a huge condo-and you also get house privileges-it’s probably worth paying a little extra. Yet, if you are wanting to save money by renting a room instead of an apartment, keep price in your mind.
3. Pet Considerations
Make sure pets are allowed at the home where you are renting a room. Also, clarify what rights the pet will have within the rest of the home. Some people will require that your pet stay only in your room, if not on his way outside. Some may say that the pet only gets house privileges with your supervision. Be clear on this before moving in, to avoid potential friction and fights later on.
4. Furnishing Plans
Consider whether a room is furnished or unfurnished. Depending on the situation, either one could be a good thing. Unfurnished rooms are generally cheaper. Yet, if you’re only in the area for a while, it may not be worth it to buy furniture that you’ll only need to throw away. Compare the cost for both scenarios in your area to find out what works best for you.
5. Actions to Take
Be sure to visit the room before you agree to rent the apartment. If you have a pet, bring him along as well, so that you have an idea of how the pet likes the place and what the roommates think of the pet. Look at the room carefully. If you see any major changes that you want to make, even if it’s painting the walls, make sure you ask your potential roommates how they feel about this up front. If you notice a major flaw with the room, you may even see if there’s negotiating room on the price. If you do that, beware that you risk alienating the potential roommates. On the other side, you may save some money. Decide what’s worth it to you.
