There are many ways to get to know your neighbors. Simple profiling will help determine the best approach.
1. Talk to Them at the Mailbox
Tenants often look through their mail in the mailbox area. If you are doing the same this is a perfect time to start small talk about the weather or a current news story. Here you will be able to know if this neighbor is someone you may want to get to know further. People can be on guard these days so be polite, not too invasive and get a feel to see if this is a neighbor worth getting to know.
2. Kids
If you have kids or just love them then keep an eye out for neighbors with the same scenario. Parents always need a “Partner in the trenches”, so feel free to offer a helping hand if you may see your neighbor juggling a stroller and groceries.
3. Organize a Party
Getting tenants to attend or even get involved in a block or building party is a sure fire way to get to know your neighbors. Everyone likes a good party and planning together may give you a chance to forge some genuine neighborly relationships.
4. Carpool
Put up a sign in a common area advertising whereabouts you may drive everyday for work and suggest a carpool. It will not only save you gas money it will give you a chance to meet new people.
5. The Super or Door Person
Befriending the superintendent or concierge of your building will go a long way in getting to know your neighbors. These people can often tell you the entire life story of most of the tenants and can clue you in to who might be a match for you.
