Bathroom cleaning is especially important in an apartment because odors travel faster in small spaces. However, the apartment dweller is likely to be on a tight budget. Save money and clean your apartment bathroom thoroughly with these tips:
1 – Don’t Pay for Convenience
A lot of harsh bathroom cleansers charge exorbitant prices for the convenience of a chemical solution in a spray bottle or with a scrub brush. Purchase your own spray bottle and scrub brush, and use common inexpensive household products instead of commercial cleansers.
2 – Use Baking Soda
Baking soda has a natural deodorant quality and can be sprinkled onto your carpets and bath mats to freshen fibers. (Just vacuum the remainder away.) You can also shake baking powder liberally in your bathtub and sink, and add a small amount of water until it achieves a paste quality. This makes an effective scrub cleanser to use when bathroom cleaning.
3 – Try Vinegar
Distilled white vinegar can be used undiluted or with up to 50% warm water to effectively kill mold and fight bacteria when bathroom cleaning. Put the vinegar or vinegar mixture into a spray bottle, and spray it over the sink, tub, tiles and shower curtain or door. If you have tough stains in your grout, let the undiluted vinegar soak for a few minutes and then use a toothbrush to get the mold out.
You can also use vinegar and baking soda to clean clogged drains. Use a long thin wire brush to scoop out as much hair and gunk as you can. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain followed by 1/2 cup vinegar. You will see the solution foam up. Let the solution soak for 5 minutes, and then run warm water through the drain. If the drain isn’t entirely unclogged, use a toilet plunger to force the clog through with pressure.
Clean a toilet with 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup vinegar. Let sit in the water, and then use a toilet scrub brush to keep the porcelain fresh.
4 – Clean with Lemon Juice
The acidic properties of lemon juice make it a safe and cheap alternative to bleach. If you have a stain on your sink or on your tub, pour lemon juice over the stain and let it soak for five minutes before scrubbing the stain away. You can also use a mixture of 1/3 cup lemon juice and 2/3 cup borax to clean a toilet.
5 – Clean Regularly to Stay Proactive
Most people wind up spending a lot of money on commercial cleansers because when they get around to bathroom cleaning, the bathroom is full of mold and stains. Clean regularly, every day, with cheap household products to avoid unhealthy and costly bacteria growth.
6 – Use a Fan and/or Window
Mildew grows quickly if you don’t keep air circulating in your bathroom after a shower. Make sure to crack a window open or use your fan every time you shower to help prevent mildew buildup.
Using natural cleaning products and cleaning consistently and thoroughly are your tools for money-saving bathroom cleaning. Extend these practices to the rest of your space, and you can save money every time you clean your apartment.
