Changing the look of the windows in your apartment can totally change the look of any room. Window treatments are one of those all-too-often forgotten style components, and they are so important. Finding great window treatments can really put the finishing touch on your decorating. Plus, there are so many different styles of window treatments to choose from. You can really have fun coordinating the styles and colors with the rest of your decor. So, it’s time to get rid of those mini-blinds (but be sure to keep them for re-installation upon move-out), and explore your other options.
Roman Shades
Roman shades are, most often, cloth shades. They come in various colors, and patterns, and can range from simple to elaborate. Some Roman Shades even have extra embellishments, such as fringes on the bottom. With Roman Shades, when you pull the cord for the shades, they raise to the top, and create neat folds of materials. Roman shades can fit in with any decor. Simple solid colored or striped shades go great with French Country decor. Patterns, elaborate shades are perfect for creating an elegant look.
Non-Sheer Drapes
Drapes, like Roman Shades, come in a variety of colors and fabrics. Non-sheer drapes are great for letting in light when pulled open, and creating privacy when pulled closed. Velvet drapes will add drama and elegance to a room. Cotton or canvas drapes in neutral colors fit in perfectly with a Shabby Chic style of decor. When choosing non-sheer drapes as your window treatment, no other privacy covering is necessarily required, but you may pair styles, and use both Roman Shades and drapes to complete your look.
Sheer Drapes
Sheer drapes come in all different colors, and are less about privacy, and more about creating a mood for a room. Sheer drapes should be in addition to window treatments that do provide privacy, and not in place of them. Sheer white drapes will make a room feel open and airy. Sheer red drapes are the perfect touch to a romantic bedroom.
Bamboo Blinds
Bamboo blinds work great with neutral, earth tone palettes. If mixed with greens, and dark browns, they add to the earthy, inviting feeling of a room. If mixed with pale beige, or mint green, bamboo blinds can help create the illusion of a beach bungalow. When you pull the cord to open the blinds they roll up, or form folds like the Roman Shades. These window treatments provide privacy, but also allow some sunlight to get through when drawn.
Each of these window treatments is affordable, and can be found at your local home store, or through an online retailer. You don’t need any special skill to install them, or any design experience to choose the ones you like. If everything else in your apartment is plain, you can use window treatments to add that personal touch, or that splash of color. Window treatments help bring a room together; they are like the icing on the cake. Just make sure to measure right.
