Apartment living is often demanding, and one of the best ways to keep up with those demands is to engage in healthy dieting. Don’t be one of the many apartment dwellers who live on take-outs and fast food restaurant meals for most or all of the week. You may not suffer the negative health effects immediately, but eating in an unhealthy manner does catch up to you in due time. If you’re living with children, then you have the additional responsibility of teaching them healthy dieting habits.
What Is a Healthy Diet
Everyone is on some type of diet, whether they know it or not. A healthy diet isn’t necessarily a diet plan. It’s a way of life, and the foods that you eat daily reflect your values. For example, if you value being in the best shape possible so that you can be of service to your family and to others, you’re going to eat foods that support that goal. You’ll stay away from foods that can lead to illness and diseases. Look at your current eating habits and pretend to be a stranger looking at your food choices. Ask yourself, “What values would he say I held based on the foods that I eat?” If the answer is in direct opposition to what you value, then it’s time to make a change.
What Foods Are on a Healthy Diet
Healthy dieting is broad, because there are so many options for foods to consider. For example, a healthy diet consisting of Mexican foods will look different from a healthy diet consisting of Italian cuisine. You may enjoy particular foods based on your upbringing and cultural experiences, and no one list could capture all the food options. Instead, you should focus on these general principles when selecting which foods to eat, and which ones to avoid:
*Eat organic foods, because pesticides and chemicals used in other foods can be harmful to your health
*Incorporate plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, because of the high fiber content
*Cook with whole grains, such as rice and oats
*Switch to raw sugar or honey and reduce or eliminate processed foods with sugar
*Avoid genetically modified foods, such as some soy and corn, and eat real foods instead
*Buy meats and chicken free of antibiotics, nitrates and hormones
*Drink plenty of water throughout the day, that’s filtered if you’re using tap or bottled water
*Minimize alcoholic beverages and stop smoking
Cooking your own foods is important to healthy dieting. You can control the ingredients you use and only include items that are healthy.
How Much to Eat
When you have a busy schedule, it’s tough to keep up with counting calories or weighing foods. The best way to control how much you eat is to remember to eat smaller portions and to stop when you’re full. Eating small meals throughout the day is fine, and can actually help to speed up your metabolism. If that’s not an option for you because of work or school, then focus on eating the right types of food when you eat larger meals.
Healthy dieting can result in different food choices for different apartment dwellers. Stick to the basic principles discussed, and you’ll make the right food choices no matter what cuisines you love the best.
