Throw a fabulous holiday party at your apartment. Follow these guidelines and you’ll be ready in no time.
Choose a Date
Pick a date in advance. Many people have full calenders starting in December. Make sure they don’t say no to yours because you planned too late. Invite people that will hit it off at the party. You’ll want an interesting mix of your friends, family and associates. Make sure to ask for an RSVP by a specified date so you can have the right amount of refreshments on hand.
Decorations
Keep it simple. Use existing surfaces like coffee tables, bookshelves and counters for appetizers. Drape tablecloths over tables and line shelves with festive paper. Use white lights and candles to supply most of the light. Keep it relatively dim. This will lend a more intimate feel to your party.
Control Traffic
Take coats as soon as guests arrive and tuck them in a closet or a bedroom separate from the party. Place food and drinks in various locations around the apartment to keep people moving. If you have outdoor space, use it. Rent heat lamps and have alternative food and beverages outside.
Food & Drink
Keep it to make-ahead appetizers and drinks. Make as much as possible before-hand; you don’t want to be slaving in the kitchen while your guests are having fun. Enlist the help of a friend to refill platters and drinks. Budget tip: Make a signature cocktail and pour into pitchers. Have glasses and garnish available for your guests to make their own. You will save a lot of money by skipping the open bar.
The goal is to have a good time. Your guests come mainly to see you. Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to have the “perfect” holiday party. Just have fun with your guests.
