Patio furniture comes in a very wide variety of styles and materials. The almost limitless choices in patio furniture can create a large difference in price range so knowing what to look for and understanding these differences before you shop can prepare you. These are some of the factors you want to consider before deciding which patio furniture is right for your apartment.

1 – Atmosphere

Patio furniture can be very elegant or as casual as a picnic bench. Deciding on the atmosphere you desire for the patio area can help you narrow down your options immensely. Patio furniture on the more elegant side will more likely be made from higher quality materials and therefore have a higher price range.

Consider how long you want to have the patio furniture and how much you want to invest in it.

2 – Materials

Patio furniture, in general, comes in plastic, metal or wood.

Plastic patio furniture is usually the cheapest type of patio furniture on the market. It can appear very cheap like PVC or it may resemble much higher quality wood furniture. Plastic patio furniture is popular because of its price and the ease of care.

Metal patio furniture is also a popular option and is usually the next step up in price. Metal furniture is known for its sturdiness and long life and is usually made from aluminum, steel or iron.

Wooden patio furniture is usually the most expensive and also requires the most care but can be very long lasting. The type of material you choose will determine the style, price range, longevity and amount of maintenance you can expect from your patio furniture.

3 – Size of Space

Be sure to consider and measure the space that the patio furniture will be placed in. Purchasing too many pieces for a small area can create a cramped and uncomfortable space.

Also consider the size of the furniture itself. Large patio furniture in a large display room of a store might look great but the same furniture placed in a tiny patio space may look awkward. Measure the square footage of the patio area before shopping and then compare to the area in the store that the particular furniture you choose is set up in. Pieces can always be eliminated from a set to make it fit the space you need.

4 – Maintenance

When choosing patio furniture, be realistic about how much time you have to put in to the maintenance of it. Purchasing very expensive wood furniture would be a waste if it is not maintained correctly.

Also consider the weather that the furniture will endure. A covered patio that does not receive much sun could use patio furniture that may not be appropriate for a patio that receives a full day of sun. Patios that receive high winds will want furniture that is heavy and will not be blown around easily. Steel furniture is heavy but if it endures wind and rain may rust eventually despite its strength. Iron furniture is heavy enough to resist winds but can also usually resist rust and is known to last a long time.
