Bedroom Furniture for Teens That Won’t Break the Bank

Choosing bedroom furniture for teens that won’t break the bank can be a little more difficult than you might think, especially when working with limited space in an apartment. However, if you find the right furnishings, your teen will be happy and you’ll be happy that you didn’t have to spend that much.

Design-It-Yourself and/or Multifunctional Bed

The centerpiece of bedroom furniture for teens is the bed. Now that your child is getting older, you can select a larger bed together, assuming you have the room. Upgrade either to a Twin XL or a Double at the minimum.

There are two types of beds that teens are guaranteed to love: one that they design themselves and one that serves more than one purpose. With the former, you can get away with purchasing the most affordable, minimal bed you can find, with a plain white headboard. Then it’s up to your teen to paint the headboard as he or she pleases. With the latter, you can purchase a bed that doubles as a comfortable chair or small couch, such as a futon on a foldable frame. This eliminates the need for you to purchase a different chair or couch, although if your teen isn’t the type to put in the effort of keeping his or her bed clean for easy conversion, this may not be the best idea.

Futuristic, Sleek Desk

One thing that many teens have in common is a love of technology. Purchasing bedroom furniture for teens that recalls this techno-heavy, futuristic feeling needn’t be overly expensive. When looking for a desk and chair, for example, look for one with sleek lines and minimalistic features. You can often find these types of furnishings on sale (aimed at college students and dorm living) during the back-to-school sales in late summer.

Cabinets, Dressers and Organization

Since it’s all too easy for teens to get messy, make organization simple for them. One of the best purchases you’ll make when shopping for bedroom furniture for teens is dressers, cabinets and organization tools. As suggested before, think simple. You can even buy secondhand cabinets and dressers and refurbish them. If you find the cabinets and dressers in plain colors, you can have your teen paint them to match the decor he or she chooses.

Organization bins are a must in a teen’s room, too. Bright-colored collapsible, stackable bins or a rolling cabinet are relatively inexpensive, especially during the back-to-school sales in the college dorm sections.

Multifunctional Bookshelf

A bookshelf can hold books, movies, CDs, trinkets, photos and mementos, and so no teen bedroom is complete without one. You can find ones made from cheap materials at most general retail stores and your teen can decorate the outside to make sure it’s more appealing.

The key to finding the right bedroom furniture for teens is to involve your teen in the decision process. Lay down the law about how much you can spend, but otherwise ask your child for input every step of the way.
