If you’re an apartment dweller you may feel limited as to how your can arrange your furniture; however, there are ways to organize your furniture that will make your apartment look more capacious as well as inviting. Therefore, before going to any furniture stores to select living room furniture, bedroom furniture or other types of furnishings, take a moment to look at the ways you can arrange your furniture to add to the livability and aesthetics of your living space.
Placement Is Key
Of course, with respect to the arrangement of furniture, placement is key. If you have a patio door or group of windows in your apartment, don’t block the light with any large pieces of furniture. Accordingly, don’t bar doorways with furniture either. Otherwise, it looks like you’re cramming furniture into your apartment as if it were a closet and not a functional space in which to live. It’s less strenuous to arrange furnishings too if you make sure you have plenty of storage so ancillary items don’t crowd areas that can be put to better use. For example, stow away an ironing board and perhaps place a small desk where the ironing board once stood. Or, maybe stash your CDs or magazines in a coffee table that conveniently allows for storage.
Enjoy the View
When arranging furniture items, especially in the living area, think about the view. Most apartments have patio doors or windows that provide this amenity. Therefore, you want to place your furnishings so they don’t hinder the view or natural light that is coming into the apartment.
Look at the Dimensions and Scale of Your Room
Obtain the dimensions of the rooms in your apartment before deciding upon the placement of any furniture. If you have a patio, size it as well for any patio furniture you wish to buy. Once you have the dimensions, you can better select furnishings that can be easily incorporated into your living areas. Arrangement is better facilitated too if you include glass tables or mirrored furniture items as they add to the illusion of space in your apartment. Keep your furniture then in alignment with the scale of each your rooms. It doesn’t matter how nice your furnishings look if they overwhelm a living area and hamper your ability to move around or function in a space.
Use Closet Doors that Work in a Small Space
When placing furniture in a small area, make sure your closet doors open in such a way that they don’t bang into furnishings. Use sliding doors if you must to fit furniture into an extremely tight space.
Maintain a Theme
To arrange furniture like a professional, it’s essential to choose pieces of furniture that complement one another. Therefore, keep the styling similar. Don’t use a hodgepodge of pieces in your decor. Keep to a theme with a little bit of your own personality thrown in for good measure. Keep major pieces of furniture central to the decor as well. For example, in the living area, make sure furnishings and window treatments coordinate with the main piece of furniture or the couch.
Keep the above information in mind when you arrange furniture and you’ll have an apartment that’s comfortable and stylish as well as functional.
