Comparing Desk Styles for an Apartment Office

Staff Writer · Jan 6, 2011

Two of the greatest concerns that renters have when it comes to choosing desk styles for an apartment office are space and weight. You may be thinking long term about moving out of the apartment, and whether you’ll need to hire a mover to move the desk because it’s heavy. There are desk styles available that address these concerns, and once you know what to look for, you may even come across a few at yard sales or on Craigslist.

Computer Work Station Desk

If finding a space-saving solution is your highest priority, then you’ll want to consider a computer work station desk. It’s designed to fit your computer and related equipment, such as printers and scanners. Some desks are made of metal and roll on wheels. Others are made of wood and sit directly on the floor. The metal ones are lightweight and easy to assemble. You can also break it down when you’re moving, and fit it in the trunk of your car or a truck rental. These desks have great features, such as:

  • A stand underneath the desk for the desktop tower to sit on
  • Pull out keyboard tray
  • Drawers to hold office supplies and paper
  • Space on desk to hold monitor and enough room to write

Computer work station desks are widely available in many department stores and online. You should also check for moving sales at the end of the college year, as many students use these desks, but don’t want to move them. You can probably find a great desk for a cheap price.

Basic Rectangular Desk

You may be a laptop user who finds a computer work station desk too bulky for you needs.Try a basic rectangular desk instead, which is made up for three pieces: A rectangular top and two legs. There are no drawers or compartments, giving you plenty of leg room, and the desk won’t take up much space. You can easily assemble and dissemble it to move to another location in the apartment, or to move out. You can find these desk styles in wood or other materials.

Writing Desk

A writing desk is one of those desk styles that’s simple in design and they are elegant. It consists of a large rectangular top, and legs with compartments. You can fit a desktop tower in a compartment,  books or other office supplies. These desks also include a keyboard tray. The only problem with this desk for a renter, is that they are  bulky and heavy. You’re going to have a tough time moving one out, even if you assemble it. You could dissemble the desk, but there’s the risk of damage to parts of the desk. If you have a long term rental situation, then it’s worth considering. If you plan to move out within one year or less, then you should choose one of the other desk styles instead.

Your space needs and the weight of the desk will help you to determine which of these desk styles to choose from. If you’re ordering online, make sure you find out the shipping weight.
