You don’t need to buy a gym membership or invest in expensive, bulky equipment in order to get in shape and follow an exercise regimen. There are many things you can do inside even the smallest apartment that will make you fit and toned in no time. Follow these ideas for creating an exercise program that you can do in the comfort of your living room.
Basic Equipment
While you don’t need to go out and spend thousands of dollars on big workout machines, you will need to invest in some basics. These will largely depend on what types of exercises you plan on doing. Start out with a set of weights that are challenging yet manageable. Other things you may end up buying are an exercise mat, resistance bands and a stability ball. Don’t forget comfortable clothing and a pair of supportive tennis shoes.
Don’t Fall for Scams
When buying equipment, remember to stick to the basics. Don’t get pulled in by the infomercials that are trying to sell you a very specialized piece of equipment. Many times, these products are completely ineffective and just a waste of money. Wrapping a band around your stomach is not going to give you rock-hard abs. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Schedule Your Workouts
One advantage of belonging to the gym is that once you get there, you have to work out. When you work out at home, it is easy to get distracted by the television, family members or a warm bed. Schedule your time to work out and stick to the plan.
It can be difficult to know if you are doing exercises correctly, especially if you are a beginner. Rather than going completely on your own, consider getting an instructional workout DVD. There are hundreds of different workout videos available, and you are sure to find one that you love. Using a workout video can help keep you motivated as you try to keep up with the instructor and other people. Save some money by renting several different DVDs so that you can try them out before you buy them.
Work Out with a Friend
Just because you are working out at home doesn’t mean you have to work out alone. Recruit a friend to come over and join in on your workout. You can help keep each other motivated and can schedule regular fitness dates.
Start Slow
When you are starting a new workout routine, you should always start slow and easy. Your muscles are probably not used to certain exercises and you can risk injury if you strain them. At home, there are no trainers available to correct your form, so you have to be extra careful. Build up on the weights as you become more accustomed to the exercises.
