Creating an exercise space in your apartment requires little or no space at all, and provides the added benefit of possibly being more cost efficient than joining a gym. Being able to exercise in your apartment also puts an end to the procrastination of going to the gym.
Large Spaces Not Required
For those of you who are small space or studio apartment dwellers, preserving floor space is critical. Purchase a yoga mat for yoga or pilates, and dumbbells for weight training. These exercise items can be stored in a closet, or under your bed. Another great item is a resistance band. Resistance bands are also easily stored. Exercise balls are great for small apartments too. Exercise balls alleviate strain on your lower back, and also provide multiple exercises for targeting problem areas. These can be deflated as necessary, or stored in a closet. When you are ready to exercise, just take out your equipment and set it up where you have some floor space available. Purchase some exercise DVDs to get you moving and motivated too. Some cable providers also have exercise shows available for anytime viewing.
Only a Corner to Spare
If you have some space, just not a lot, then a corner is all you need to create an exercise area in your apartment. Most treadmills, elliptical machines, and steppers fold up for easy storage. They can be folded up and butted up against the wall, or rolled into a closet and then removed when you are ready to exercise. If you purchase a machine, make sure that you also purchase an exercise mat. Exercise mats are critical for minimizing noise for your downstairs neighbors and preventing floor damage. Yoga mats, dumbbells, resistance bands and exercise balls are not just for small spaces, but are important for any exercise routine. Make sure that you purchase these too.
If weight training is more your focus, then a weight machine with multiple exercise options can be purchased. While these do not generally fold-up, a smaller model can easily fit into the corner of a room. Another option for weight training is to purchase a bar with detachable weights. These weights can be stored on a stand, and also stored in the corner of a room.
A Room of Your Own
If space is not a problem at all, then you can really create at at-home gym in your apartment. Purchase a cardiovascular machine, a weight machine and other accessories. However, without the concern for space, your equipment can be more static. What that means is you can purchase a larger weight machine with more functions or a heavy duty cardiovascular machine, each of which probably does not store easily. If you have the space, also purchase a weight bench for weight lifting. Adjustable weight benches are a great option. They allow you to lift weights from different angles, providing you with the ability to target more areas.
Living in an apartment does not mean that you have to join a gym in order to exercise. No matter the size of your living space, you can create an exercise area.
