Decorating a small space living room can be tricky but there are a few tips you can use to your advantage to make the most of the space you have and make the room appear larger than it actually is. The living room is one of the most used rooms in the house and is also most commonly where company gathers to socialize. Making a living room that appears roomy and comfortable is important for these reasons.

Using the Right Colors

Avoid dark paint colors in a small living room, this will only cause the already cramped room to appear smaller and more cave-like. Use light or warm colors on walls and furniture to make the room feel airy and open. Using colors on the walls that match the furniture or are at in the same color family will make the room feel less broken up than using several different colors. Avoid complicated patterns on furniture and window coverings that make the room too busy. Light, airy fabrics are best.

Take Advantage of Light

Any natural light in the room should be taken advantage of. Windows should not be covered with dark curtains or window coverings. Instead use blinds that can lowered when privacy is needed but during the day can let in all that natural light. Dark rooms always feel smaller than rooms that are well lit. If no natural light is available, add several lamps or overhead lighting fixtures to the room to ensure that it has enough light.

Arranging the Room

Smaller rooms need to avoid clutter as much as possible. This makes the room feel too cramped and messy. Knick knacks and collectibles should be stored away or displayed in a neat and tidy display case if necessary. Avoid cluttering up the walls with too many photos or art, choose a couple of larger pieces to emphasize each wall allowing for plenty of empty wall space. Use pieces of furniture that are necessary for the room instead of lots of decorative pieces that have minimal use. Adding a large mirror to a wall can cause the room to appear larger as well.

Multi-Purpose Furniture

A great way to use less furniture in a small living room is by using furniture that has several functions. Storage is a big necessity in any room but using storage that is hidden away in smaller rooms can decrease clutter and improve how large the room appears. Use coffee tables, end tables or ottomans that open for storage inside and can hide away games, toys or shoes when not in use.

Ottomans or coffee tables that are padded on top are great because they can be used for extra seating when company is over instead of cluttering up the living room with extra seating that is rarely used.
