A new baby requires plenty of preparation around the home. Many women want to catch up on their to-do list and have projects around the home completed and ready for the baby to arrive. Decorating an apartment may be one of these projects on the list. There are a few things to take in to consideration when decorating the apartment with a baby on the way that may not have been considerations previously.

Choosing Safe Tables

If choosing new tables for the apartment is one of the items that you will be re-decorating, keep some pointers in mind so that you do not end up with a table that will not be safe for the new baby. Glass coffee tables or end tables should not be used with babies or toddlers. Choose coffee tables, end tables and dining room tables that have rounded edges or are round or oval in shape.

Sharp corners will inevitably cause an injury when a baby starts to crawl and eventually walk so keeping things like this in mind now will prevent you from wasting money on a table that will no longer be safe soon. Tables or desks that you already have and are not intending on replacing can have corners covered with padded corner and edge covers that your local baby store will carry.

Choosing Safe Window Treatments

Window blinds have been known to be a strangulation threat to young children, keep this in mind when choosing new window treatments. Regular window blinds can be used but the cord needs to be secured up so it is not hanging down to get tangled around a child. Roman blinds or roll up blinds are usually not a good choice for a home with small children because blinds made with any kind of loop hanging down can easily get caught around a child’s neck. Cordless window products are available and are really the best safety choice for children.

Choose Safe Furniture

New furniture is a lot of fun to buy and should last a long time so keep in mind all safety hazards when picking out the new furniture in order to allow it to last you many years to come. All furniture should be stable and not tipsy. Looking at a piece of furniture, you may not consider it unsafe but try pulling or pushing on it down at a baby’s level and see what happens. Furniture that is top heavy may tip over very easily.

Dressers and bookcases need to have a wide base to make it as stable as possible. Heavier models made of real wood are often more stable than the lighter pressed wood models. Some dressers may tip when the lower drawers are opened at once and should be secured to the wall with a safety kit. Buy home accessories that can be placed up high where they will be out of reach. Don’t purchase knick knacks or small decorations that could be a choking hazard or will easily be broken.
