Displaying Your Shoes as Décor

Deciding what kind of style you want, the most important items to purchase, and where to put things can take months to years and can be very frustrating. However, there are many common items around your house that while not traditionally used for décor, can add a new dimension to your style without breaking the bank. An important part of this budget is looking in unconventional spaces for cool things you may have and how you could put them on display.

For example, early last year I realized I had a pretty amazing shoe collection, and many pairs that I wasn’t wearing. These shoes are nice and one of a kind, and besides being uncomfortable, overall perfect. So, I decided instead of just having these purchases sit in a dark closet waiting to be worn, why not show of their uniqueness in my home? If you too are a shoe addict, there are several ways you can put those beauties on display.

The most obvious example is putting your shoes in a row on the floor. When someone enters your room, they will be able to marvel at your collection and it also makes it easier for you to decide which pair to wear when they are all visible (even if a bit OCD). Another great way to display your shoes is to purchase a vintage wooden ladder that you can either stand up or lean against a wall. Scatter a couple pair of heels hanging on this as a playful way to mix new with old. With this option, it could even be a sampler of which shoes you have. For example, just put one heel from the pair out displaying more pairs of shoes.

Another way to display your favorite heels is purchase a glass dome bell display case. Make sure it is big enough to fit your heel. Insert the heel underneath the glass and place on a coffee table or side table for a chic feel. This looks extra classy if stacked on top of some coffee table fashion books. If you have a large floor mirror, you can hang heels from the top as an unexpected decoration. If you have a vintage or unique pair of shoes you might not wear as much, you can even put them in a shadow box and hang on the wall. This looks better with shoes such as AirJordans or custom Nikes.

Although shoes may not be the most traditional décor item, there are several ways to take a useful item and give them multipurpose. Think of your favorite items and the look you are aiming for with your home and see if there are items like shoes you can use as ‘surprise’ décor. This also gives your space a laid back feel because like a gallery wall, using shoes on display give a home a more relaxed, not stick straight feel. What are your favorite non-traditional items to decorate with?
