DIY Apartment Decorating: Simple and Stylish Canvas Paintings

Staff Writer · Nov 29, 2010

Canvas paintings can be used to enhance both modern and classic décor. Because a canvas painting can portray any scenes and colors, and because there are no frames requiring that they hang on a wall, canvas paintings are a great, inexpensive element to include

The Size of Canvas

Because there is no frame, a canvas painting can often be larger than a framed one. Therefore, when deciding where you would like to put a canvas painting, measure the entire space without including room for a frame. Because no frame needs to be taken into account, you will often be able to use a much larger painting or several smaller paintings in your décor. This is why it is important to measure the entire space, including height.

Additionally, the sides of unframed canvas paintings will be visible. Often, the picture will be wrapped on the sides of the canvas, creating an interesting view you will want to make visible.

The Location of the Canvas

While they can be hung, unframed canvas paintings do not necessarily have to be hung like traditional framed paintings. Their flat, thick and wooden sides and base enable canvas paintings to be set on shelves or the floor and leaned against the wall. Extremely tall or extremely large paintings look particularly good when positioned on the floor, leaning against a wall.

Keep in mind that a larger wall space may be the perfect place to display more than one canvas painting. Similarly sized or odd sized canvas paintings can be hung together, either in a structured or random manner, to create an eye-catching display.

The Color of the Canvas

Because there is no frame, the colors of a canvas painting are often more vibrant. Beware this fact when choosing one as an item in your décor. Bright colors will look best in an otherwise neutrally decorated room, while muted colors may work well in an otherwise colorful area.

The Canvas Portrait

Because an unframed canvas is often more eye-catching in itself, its picture should be relatively soft. Do not purchase a picture with harsh lines or a picture that appears too perfect. A canvas painting should look unique and free-flowing. As such, steer clear of reproductions or generic looking paintings.

Free-flowing canvas paintings, however, still fit well into an otherwise structured décor, such as modern or very traditional decorating even though nontraditional themselves. If your decorating consists of severe, clean lines, focus on choosing a painting that mirrors these lines while still maintaining a soft feel. For a modern residence, choose a painting that has uneven or fading strokes in bright colors; a canvas with softer colors depicting a scene will fit best into a home with traditional décor.

Unframed canvas paintings are often less expensive than framed paintings. As such, they are an interesting and cheaper means to decorate your home. Do not be afraid to purchase larger canvas paintings either to hang or situate on the floor. As always, though, let your personality shine with any artwork you purchase.
