Ergonomics home office design and set-up are essential components in achieving a home office environment in your apartment home that provides for less strain on your muscles and a more comfortable working environment. In order to make this happen, there are several areas that need to be addressed.
The Computer Station
If you want to avoid any kind of neck strain, then it’s essential that you ergonomically position your VDU or the visual display unit of your computer at the right height. Make sure that the screen on your computer is at eye level. It shouldn’t be higher or lower than this adjusted height if you want to work comfortably and keep the muscles in your neck pain-free. Also assess the distance you’re sitting from the computer screen. To keep from hurting your eyes, you should sit approximately an arm’s length away from the monitor. In other words, place your arm out in front of you from where you’re sitting. You’re at the proper distance if your fingers barely touch the computer screen.
The Type of Lighting
Next, survey the lighting. You should have adequate lighting in which to work proficiently. In work areas with computers, the lighting should be sufficient though soft enough to reduce the amount of glare on the computer screen. Nevertheless, you don’t want the lighting to be too soft or you’ll be obligated to sit much too close to the screen.
The Work Desk Area
Your work desk area should offer you enough latitude to comfortably move around. In other words, make sure you have enough space to work efficiently and avoid any kind of cramping or stiffness. Also, make certain the desk is adjusted at a height where you can readily cross your legs in the space beneath.
Your Desk Chair
Probably your desk chair will be the most important investment you make in your home office as it is the one piece of furniture you’ll be utilizing the most. Therefore, it should be comfortable as well as sturdy. Make sure that it accommodates your back muscles so you won’t suffer from any back problems down the road. The chair should be adjustable and provide armrests and a backrest that can be positioned for individual comfort. It should have a swivel and tilt base as well. Situate your chair so you have enough leeway to sit comfortably, or allow for at least 3 inches clearance between the back of your knee and front portion of your chair.
The Noise Level
Also, make an assessment of the level of noise in your home office environment. It’s important to work in a place free from noise and distractions if you want to do your best. Noise can come from your computer, the hum of outside traffic or from your kids or a family pet. Therefore, make sure that you’re comfortable with the level of noise and that it won’t impair you from communicating effectively.
Take time out then and look at the design and environment of your home office. Make it your goal to make it seem as aesthetically pleasing as if you were conducting your work activity in any well-appointed office in a commercial complex.
