Fed Up with Noisy Upstairs Neighbors? Four Solutions

There is little doubt that noisy upstairs neighbors will give you little peace downstairs. And, if you’re unsure or just don’t know what to do, know that you’re not alone. Solving this major problem may require only minor effort. Here are some solutions for solving your issues quickly and easily.

1. Speak to Your Neighbor Courteously and Respectfully

Every property manager has received numerous calls reporting noise complaints, and noise from an upstairs tenant would probably top their list. Instead of getting mad as your first reaction, just know that your neighbor upstairs most likely doesn’t even know that he is bothersome to you.

Even the most conscientious neighbor may be oblivious that their children are wrestling in the bedroom, or their short wave radio conversations can cut through drywall like a knife through butter. Try taking the neighborly approach first by simply explaining the problem to your neighbor, in hopes of resolving the issue amicably. Any reasonable neighbor, when approached politely, will most likely be willing to work it out. 

2. Bring a Witness

Should you not be able to convince your neighbor alone, try one more time. But, this time take your roommate, friend, spouse, or anyone who can verify that there is a problem. If you can solve this problem with a courteous tone, then you may open up a permanent dialogue between you and your neighbor.

3. Bring the Issue to Your Landlord’s Attention

If your neighbor does not respond in positive fashion, at least you’ve already taken the highroad and know that you have no choice but to involve your landlord.

Make sure you keep good records, and document the dates and times of noise issues. Bring this information to your landlord’s attention. A good landlord will act as liaison between you and the noisy neighbor, again trying amicably to resolve the issue. 

4. Call Local Authorities

Now that you’ve done all you can, calling the police may be the final option. When the leasing office is closed, you must remember that this is your home and unruly neighbors do not have the right to disrupt your quality of living.

As always, be courteous to your landlord, neighbor or police when dealing with this issue. A property manager (or anyone) will tire of a resident who appears only to complain. Copy your notes and documentation, and be ready to show management, your neighbor or the police when attempting to resolve this issue.
