Find the Best Apartment Location: 7 Factors to Consider

There are several things you need to think about when trying to choose the best apartment location. Here are 7 factors to consider before signing a lease agreement.

1. Crime Rates

Is the apartment located in a high crime area? Do some internet research on the neighborhood and apartment building to find out if there’s a lot of crime in that location. An area with a lot of criminal activity can be a huge detriment to live in, for both personal and property safety. It can also cause your insurance rates to go up. Search state and local sex offender registries to find out if there are any potential threats in the building or neighborhood.

2. Noise Level

Does the apartment building allow pets? If so, you can expect noise from barking dogs at times. Check to see how close the building is to other major sources of noise. Is it next to a freeway, railroad tracks, a fire station or an airport? All of these can contribute to the overall living experience, and you can expect noise at any time of day or night if the building is located near them.

3. Commute to Work

How far will you have to drive to get to work from the apartment? The length of your commute can affect your auto insurance rate. You might be able to find an apartment with a great rental price, only to find that the difference is eaten up by your monthly fuel bill. You should also consider the amount of time it takes to get to work.

4. Proximity to Shopping and Other Services

Is the apartment building close to the grocery store, restaurants, your bank branch or other services you rely on? The same principle applies as your commute to work. If you have to travel farther for essential services, factor the fuel costs into your budget.

5. Building Security

Does the apartment building have a good security system? Does it include a key card or other system to even access the building? Does it have security cameras? The more secured the apartment, the better it is for your as a renter.

6. Laundry Facilities

Does the apartment building have its own laundry facilities? Do the apartments have washer/dryer hookups? This can be another major factor in choosing an apartment. The time, energy and money required to travel to a laundromat can outweigh a great location or low monthly rent.

7. Family Amenities

Does the apartment have a fenced-in pool, playground or other amenities for families with children? If so, are these areas safe and secure? If the family amenities you need are not provided, make sure there are some within walking distance, such as parks or recreation facilities.

Just because you locate an apartment with a low monthly rent payment doesn’t mean it will be the right choice for you. Any of the above factors can cost you more money in the long run than choosing a more expensive place to rent in another area. Take these factors into consideration and do your research if you want to find the best apartment location.
