Flower Gardening in Your Balcony: A Guide

Flower gardening is possible in even the smallest of spaces. Just because you live in an apartment does not mean that you have to give up your wish to have a luxurious flower garden. Below are tips to build a great flower garden on your balcony.

Think Vertical

Even the largest of apartment balconies will not be overly spacious. Additionally, you may not want to dedicate an entire balcony to a flower garden. The trick to creating a vast and varied flower garden is to think vertically. Because many flowers can be grown in pots and either stacked on shelves or hung from the ceiling you can use the entire space up to your ceiling. Stacking flowers may require you to build shelves or another type of unit to make the most of the available area.

The space you choose should be easily accessible, have a nearby water source and be protected from strong winds. Also, you should not cause damage to the balcony or walls when you plant or water your flowers. Measure the space to determine how much room you have so you can estimate how many flowers you can plant. Finally, plan what you will use to stack flowerpots, such as a bookshelf, outdoor shelving unit or a bench.

Be Prepared

Prior to purchasing any plants you should completely set up the space you intend to use as a garden. Purchase or build any shelves you need to hold your pots. Determine how and where you will store gloves, tills and fertilizers and put them away. Next, set out the pots as you would like them arranged to make sure they will fit in the space.

Make Plans for Planting

Prior to beginning planting or growing flowers you will need to research which flowers are in season and whether they will grow in your climate. Also check what types of soil each flowers grow best in as you may need to purchase different types to ensure your garden’s maximum growth. Following this research, plan where you will plant or place each flower in the arranged pots. An easy way to do this is to place small labels of where each flower will be located on the shelves. This organization will help you notice whether a plant will grow too large or high for its current location or block sunlight from reaching the other flowers.

Get Creative

A flower garden allows you to show off your personality more than a vegetable or fruit garden. Be creative with the types and sizes of flowers you pick. You can choose to grow only one type or color of flower or non-blooming flower plants. Possibly, you can choose flowers of every color in the rainbow but place similar colors on the same shelf. Whatever you choose, though, be creative and make sure to show your personal style. Being more creative in your gardening often leads to a more impressive garden.

Flower gardening is an extremely fun and relaxing activity that is not only for homeowners. Apartment dwellers can set up and grow multiple flowers on balconies with little effort.
