Autumn is here and it’s time to get warm and cozy. As the weather cools down and busy schedules heat up you want a comforting home to come home to. Take some decorating cues from Mother Nature and infuse some fall into your apartment.

If the heart of your apartment is the kitchen, fill a wooden bowl with bright orange and yellow gourds or a rustic vase of cheery sunflowers. Go for a walk and bring home some fallen leaves and pine branches. Artistically arrange them in a woven basket. If you live in an area where fall foliage is in abundance, pick up a large inexpensive basket and fill it with beautiful nature. This can be placed in your entryway, beside the couch, anywhere you want a little burst of fall. If gathering your own isn’t the best option, most floral shops will be bursting with colorful autumn possibilities.

If you are looking to do a little freshening up in terms of linens, red, oranges, yellows and browns are the colors of the season. The tones are more rustic and warm, not bright and brassy. There are easy ways to add non-permanent color to every room. Bring out a few blankets to drape over the couch or a chair; buy a paisley rug; add sashes to your curtains or find some fun new kitchen towels.

If you are up for a more dramatic re-do and want to incorporate fall colors, using different shades of the same one makes for a lovely layered look that is warm and inviting. Yellow works great as a color that brightens a space yet can pull different hues together. ‘Colorless design’ is also popular. This involves using texture and shape instead of color. You can get it by incorporating different fabrics (tweed, chunky knits) into your living space as well as sculptured art. Anything really that screams to be touched.

Earthy Green, Marigold, and Rust are a few trending colors this year, and if you haven’t jumped on the trend yet, autumn is the perfect time to do so. It’s as easy as picking up a few vases, throw pillows, and candles. Don’t forget to get some matching candles. Throw in a mix of small and large pumpkin accents that never go out of style and some faux foliage, and your decor is ready!

Finally, look around at your art. Switching out pieces seasonally can transform your room quickly and with no cost to you. Put away the lovely beach scene and choose photos or art pieces with a cozier tone and feel.
