Good Vibes In and Out: 5 Easy Tricks to Get Rid of Marijuana Smell

Man prepares to spark up a marijuana cigarette/joint in the comfort of his home.

With marijuana and CBD products becoming legal in many states now, more and more people are enjoying the benefits of cannabis at home. Unfortunately, the smell of marijuana smoke can be pervasive, long-lasting, and settle into all kinds of fabrics and furniture. If you live in an apartment or shared space, your roommates or neighbors may also be put off by the smell. But fear not! This is easily remedied with some simple solutions that are sure to leave your space smelling fresh in no time.

Enjoy your legal marijuana without having to worry about the after-effects using these easy tips for eliminating its oh-so-distinctive aroma.

Curate Your Smoking Space

If you’re unable to smoke outside, the best way to cut the scent of marijuana is to create a designated smoking space. Setting aside a room where you can enjoy your bud without worrying about lingering odors is a great solution if you have the space for it.

Of course, even with a designated smoking room, you still need to keep the air in your home as fresh as possible. Take the following steps to keep your cannabis contained and your indoor air smelling sweet all day long:

Keep Your Smoking Room Well-Ventilated

Cracking a window to let the outside air in will create an air flow that will prevent your smoke from settling on the ceiling and creating a stronger smell. Fans are also a helpful addition, as they can create a cross-draft that keeps the air continuously moving.

Keep the Door Closed

This may seem counterproductive, but keeping the door firmly shut will cut down on the smoke leaving the smoking room and sneaking into the rest of your apartment. For extra protection, place a thick bathroom towel against the bottom of the door.

Create Sweet-Smelling Solutions

Not everyone has the luxury (or space) to create a designated smoking room. This means that if you want to cut down on the lingering smell of marijuana, you need to get creative. The key is not to overwhelm the smell with a competing scent. This will just leave the whole area still smelling like pot — just with a hint of flowers. It could also be a telltale sign to others that you’re about to spark one up. To avoid this, try keeping the scent relatively neutral and fresh-smelling without being overwhelming. Light a candle, burn some incense, or spray a room refresher before you light up, as these will help to neutralize the smell more naturally.

Think Outside the Box

If you’re short on space, lack adequate ventilation, or don’t want to light a million candles, there are other, even more creative ways to limit the distinctive smell of weed. One trick is to fashion a blow tube to help neutralize the smell. Simply take a cardboard toilet paper roll and place fabric softener sheets inside, securing an additional sheet around the end with a rubber band. Blow your smoke into this little tube and use the smell of fresh laundry to help mask the smell. A variation on this is to add dryer sheets to a plastic bottle, or simply just blow your smoke into the bottle and seal it to keep it contained inside.

Freshen Up Your Fabrics

Now that you’ve neutralized the smell in the air, it’s time to work on the fabrics. Marijuana smoke has a tendency to linger, and it can settle into fabrics like rugs, curtains, blankets, and even your couch — especially if you’re a regular smoker. Below are some ways to protect your fabrics from those pesky pot odors.

Rug Refresh

Sprinkle some carpet odor eliminator onto your rugs and give them a quick once-over with your vacuum to help keep the smell from sinking in. An added bonus is that this also gives you a great excuse to vacuum!

Nifty Neutralizers

Another way to help keep your fabrics smelling fresh and weed-free is to use a neutralizer like baking soda or activated charcoal. Placing baking soda in your fridge is a great and easy way to absorb unwanted odors, so why not apply the same principle to the room you’re smoking in? Fill a small container with baking soda and place it discreetly in the room while you’re smoking, making sure to leave it there for at least a few days to maximize its potential for absorption. Activated charcoal works in the same way, though you can save yourself the hassle of storing it in a container and just purchase it ready to go in a room deodorizer pouch or sachet.

Fabric Refresher Spray

Give your fabrics a boost of freshness with a spritz of fabric refresher spray every now and then to keep those pesky odors from settling in. Just remember: a little goes a long way here. You don’t want the room to be a cloying mix of competing smells, as it will probably draw even more attention to the fact that you’re smoking inside.

A friendly reminder: Be sure to read the instructions before using any or all of the above products on your fabrics, linens, rugs, or furniture. Some products are not universal and can leave stains if not used properly.

Get Smarter with Storage

Marijuana Buds stored securely in a thick glass jar to keep the odor from leaking out.

Smoking isn’t the only way that marijuana can cause unwanted odors in your living space. Sometimes just having your bud on the premises is enough to create that strong and distinctive odor. This is especially noticeable to people who don’t smoke, or who can’t stand the smell of marijuana (yet they can somehow smell it from a mile away). To protect your stash from prying noses, make sure you store it in a sealed container. Plastic baggies are the traditional choice, but if you have a particularly smelly strain on hand you may want to double bag it or add an extra layer of protection by wrapping it in foil. Placing it inside yet another sealed container like a jar is also advisable, as this creates a more effective seal.

There are many ways to enjoy marijuana that don’t involve smoking. If you don’t feel comfortable having the smell in your home, consider trying edibles instead. Smoking isn’t for everyone, of course, but for the traditionalists among us who still prefer their weed in a smokable form, use a vape pen or small pipe to limit the amount of smoke you’re producing. Whatever your choice of smoke, if you follow the above tips you really can have the best of both worlds: a lovely smelling home with plenty of fresh air where you can also enjoy smoking without worry.
