Blending Portable Air Conditioners into Your Décor

Staff Writer · Jun 9, 2011

It’s important to blend small portable air conditioners into your decor, so they don’t stick out like a sore thumb. There are a number of ways to do this, and the smaller sized air conditioners makes this task easy. You’ll have to consider the overall look you want to achieve in your apartment, but after you decide on your decorating style, blending a small portable air conditioner is not a problem.

Place House Plants around It

Tall house plants work best to blend small portable air conditioners into your decor. Select your favorite tall plant variety and put one on either side of the unit. You don’t have to use real plants, either. Consider an artificial plant from an arts and crafts store if you suffer from allergies. You may not have the time to care for a real plant, or are concerned about your children, dogs or cats eating it. The leaves should be thick and full, whether you buy a real or artificial plant.

Buy a Color that Matches the Decor

There aren’t many options for colors when buying a small portable air conditioner. The common colors are white, black, silver or metallic. You’re not going to find a bright yellow unit to match the retro decorating style in your living room. However, you can at least choose a color for your air conditioner that best matches the look you are trying to create. For example, if you choose a modern contemporary style, then metallic or silver would be your first choice, as opposed to a white colored air conditioner. If your bedroom walls, linen and furniture are all white, then a small white air conditioner is a perfect match.

Place next to End Table

Find one with a color that matches your end tables. Place the unit next to your end table that’s closest to your window, and your small portable air conditioner will blend in nicely. It’s hard to do this if you have wood furniture, because brown is not available as a color for portable air conditioners. Consider replacing your wooden end table, or paint it black, white or silver to match the air conditioner unit.

Tuck in Corner

Don’t place your air conditioner in the middle of the room if you want it to blend in. Tuck it in the corner near a window, if possible. If the paint or wallpaper matches the color of the air conditioner, that’s even better. You’ll only notice it if you don’t have another focal point in the room. If that’s the case, create one using artwork, by decorating a fireplace mantle or hanging up mirrors.

Adjacent to Couch

Fit your small portable air conditioner in between the arm of your couch and the wall. You may have to place the couch near a window to ensure that the unit works effectively. You may not see it unless you’re standing up in the room, or when you first enter your apartment.

Take the time to problem solve how to blend your small portable air conditioner into your decor using any of these solutions. One of these is sure to work for you.
