If you’re a little handy and have some basic electrical and hand tool skills, you too can build your own bed frame. Here are the steps in helping you create a custom bed frame.Step 1: Tools
Before you start, you will need some basic tools to complete the job. First, you will need an electric or battery powered drill with several wood bits and a Phillips screwdriver bit. Next, you will need a measuring tape, Phillips screwdrivers, pencils and a hammer. You will also need some supplies such as wood glue, 1′ and ½’ wood screws, and of course some plywood and a few 2 x 4 studs. You can paint or stain the frame to your liking.
After you have gathered your tools and supplies, you’re ready to start. Please keep in mind that if you’re a novice at using power tools, you must read all instructions and take safety seriously.
Most of the larger home improvement stores will cut and rip any plywood or studs for you absolutely free with a simple phone call before your visit to the store.
Step 2: Measure the Length and Width of Your Mattress
Once you have these measurements add about 3 inches to both. Consider how high you want the bed to be, and subtract the total height of the box spring and mattress from that number. This will give you the height at which your frame should be built. Let’s say 12 inches.
You now need to determine the sides, front and back of the frame. These measurements should be the same as the measurements that the mattress will be resting on. (Length and width.) The width of your mattress will determine the length of your 2 x 4s. For stronger support, get more of these pieces, but use at least four. You also want to get two 2 x 4s the same length of the sheet of plywood.
Step 3: Assemble the Frame
Now it’s time to assemble the frame. You want to take the plywood, and build the 2 x 4 frame to that exact measurement. Using wood glue and wood screws outline the plywood with the 2 x 4s. Next, take the sides of your frame and screw them to the 2 x 4s. This will also cover up the 2 x 4 supports. Do the same for the front and back of the frame.
Step 4: Dress up the Frame
You can always dress up your frame by adding a head and foot board later on. Also, you can add some designer chair rail wood strips to outline the top of your frame to keep the box spring or mattress from moving or shifting. Finally, you can paint or stain your wood frame to your liking.
