How to Choose Decorations for Living Room Spaces

Choosing the decorations for a living room may seem like a daunting task. You may want the room to look like it is from the pages of a home design magazine, but it also has to function as a place for your family to live, work and play. Many people make the mistake of picking out a bunch of home furnishings that they like, only to find out that the collection doesn’t really look that great when it all comes together. The most important rule to remember when decorating a room is to plan it out before you start buying.

Consider Function

Before you fill your head with visions of spotless white carpeting, formal designer couches and glass coffee tables, consider the function of the room. Is your living room the type that gets used a few times a year at formal family gatherings? Many people, especially apartment dwellers, will find that their living area is the central part of the home that the family spends the most time in. If you have kids, you have to assume that the furniture may fall victim to a few spilled drinks or a toddler jumping on it. If you have a rambunctious puppy in the house, a collection of hand-blown glass vases may not be the best idea. Your decorating ideas will have to be able to stand up to your family’s lifestyle.

Do Research

Resist the urge to go out to your favorite home store and load up the shopping cart. Professional interior decorators would never start randomly placing objects around the room without a well thought out plan. If you aren’t exactly sure what you want your new living room to look like, do a little bit of research first. Scour the Internet for interior design and decorating websites. Save images of the rooms you love or any furnishings that really catch your eye. You could also buy a few home decorating magazines and clip out the pictures that inspire you. Then take inventory of all the images you have saved. Determine what kind of style you seem to gravitate towards. Is there a specific color that seems to dominate your images? Once you have figured out what you like, you can get a general picture of the kind of theme and color scheme that you can employ in your own living room.

Shop and Compare

Depending on your budget, you might want to do a little shopping around and price comparison before you start buying any home furnishings. Many home decorating magazines and websites will list the sources of the items seen in the photographs. Chances are, most of these furnishings and decorating items will carry designer price tags. Keep in mind that the spending can add up when it comes to designing a room. Look for discounted items that look similar or are the same style as the designer finds. If there is room in your budget to splurge on an item or two, spend that extra money on the furniture. Well-built quality furniture can last a lifetime. Chances are, you will probably want to change the decor items of the room in a few years as design trends change. There is no point on investing a lot of money in something that you may change your mind about later.
