Once in awhile the news reports a story about a crazy roommate who has done this or that. It can shake people up, making it kind of scary to find a roommate. If you are looking for a stranger to share your living space with the best thing to do is prepare and beware.
Figure out Who Suits You
Use your instincts. First impressions are usually right. Be aware of the person’s approach to life. Do many of their comments seem positive or negative? If they are negative chances are that crazy (or a real downer of a roommate) is just around the corner. Make a list of all the things that you enjoy. Food, movies, sports, whatever gets you going. Refer to your list and ask them their feelings on each subject. If they are crazy maybe they are crazy for the stuff you like.
Financial Docs, References, etc.
If this person is crazy they just may make up a being employed story and you could be stuck with the bill when they cannot make their portion of the rent or worse yet, disappear with your favorite piece of jewelry.
Cleanliness
Take a look at the person. Really look. Notice if they are well put together and not unkempt with stained or frayed clothing. How a person presents themselves is often an indicator of their mental state. Ask questions like, “What are your feelings about cleaning the apartment?” and “Should we do it ourselves or chip in for a domestic?”
Hygiene
As odd as it sounds, look at their skin, hair, fingernails and teeth. These are telltale signs of good (or bad) hygiene which in turn can sometimes determine a person’s mental status.
Schedule
Erratic schedules can sometimes be red flags for erratic behavior. Ask about the person’s schedule, especially if they are a morning or a night person. It is usually best to try to fit your potential roommate into your schedule rather than the other way around.
Relationship Status
Try to dig into their relationship history. A lineage of bad breakups pretty much means you could be witness to one.
Background Check
This can be costly but worth it. Once you feel comfortable with one or two potential roommates, look into some background check companies. You may need social security numbers but sometimes two or three last known addresses will work. Also Google their name under search choices: web and images.
