Trunks in the home have made a comeback in the last several years and having an original, unique one adds great depth to the home. Although some people may see ‘vintage’ as old, this is not the case especially with trunks. They used to be used as luggage but now being too clunky, many have become collectors’ items and found in many homes. Think about it, not only do you get a one of a kind piece for your home, but they have many purposes and can be used in several different rooms in your space. Also, if you know where to look, you can find trunks at very reasonable prices.
But first, where do you get a vintage trunk?
I picked mine up at a local flea market and find that those are the best spots to find a reasonably priced one. Unless you are looking for a rare brand such as a Louis Vuitton trunk, you can refurbish and clean a trunk bought at a flea market and purchase it at astonishingly low prices. The great aspect about flea markets is you can also bargain, to make the price even lower. Outside flea markets, there are always local antique stores that tend to carry trunks. Trunks purchased at flea markets will vary in price with size, but can run you as low as $20. Before purchasing, make sure the trunk is sturdy and not falling apart. Ask to examine the inside as well as the bottom. You want to be positive you know you are getting the best bang for your buck.
Now that I have a trunk, what do I do with it and how do I fit it into my style?
Once you have a trunk, there are ways to utilize it with different décor styles. If you have a classic or rustic style pattern you follow in your home, have it polished, cleaned and refurbished to fit the quality of your home. If you like the more eclectic or industrial style, the natural and unpolished look may be more fitting for your space. Also you can play with color as a way to customize your trunk to your home. If you are not interested in maintaining the original color of your trunk, a quick splash of a bright color can make a trunk add some serious pop to your home and be changed frequently.
Mostly you see trunks used as coffee tables, but they have several other uses. They make great storage for blankets and can be utilized as an end of bed bench. I use mine as both storage and décor. I store things inside that I don’t want on display (old files, blankets, clothes) and then decorate it with framed photos, books and knick-knacks. If you find yourself really intrigued by trucks as décor, there are many trunk collectors who have several and stack them as décor or as a taller table. Trunks are always a conversation starter and very easy to spruce up for a home setting.
