There’s a reason why some of the most elegant rooms profiled in home magazines use neutral colors. Very few color schemes can compete with a neutral color scheme when it comes to making a room look luxurious and classy. With the right combination of wallpaper or paint, furniture upholstery and accessories or wall art, you can use neutral colors to give your apartment a stylish makeover. Here’s how to implement neutral colors, such as cream, gray, brown or off-white, into your apartment:
Furniture
Buying furniture can be expensive, and the color of a furniture set makes a difference in price. When picking furniture for a neutral colors decor, start with beige. If you prefer, try an off-white color. You’ll have to take other aspects of your apartment life into consideration though, such as the likelihood of it getting stained. For example, an off-white color is not the best choice for a couch or furniture set when you have young children. An accidental spill is inevitable and will ruin the couch. However, if you’re a bachelor who’s often not at home, then it’s a great match.
Window Treatment
Match the draperies to the decor, by choosing neutral colors. You don’t want to pick bold colors for window treatment, because it will detract from the theme of the room and end up being an eyesore. Select colors for your curtains that match your furniture and accessories, which should all be neutral colors.
Area Rugs
Buy area rugs that match the neutral decor you’ve created with your furniture and window treatment. You may not be able to do much about the carpet installed with the apartment, but covering it up with furniture and area rugs should help. Some area rugs are expensive, which makes buying one that’s a neutral color, a wise investment. For example, you may not be able to use a bright orange area rug that matches your current walls perfectly in the next apartment. However, you can incorporate an area rug that’s a neutral color in any apartment.
Artwork
Artwork often becomes its own focal point in the room, and when placed right, it will be the center of attention. For that reason, you don’t want to display art that contradicts the neutral color theme you’re trying to create. Choose art that blends in with the tone of the room. Perhaps picking a wooden or metal frame is enough. However, if the artwork has too many bold colors, it can make the room look busy rather than calm, which is the effect created by neutral colors. That’s not to say that a painting can’t have any bold colors. For example, find a painting that has one bold color that will compliment the neutral colors, to spice things up.
Use gray or beige colors if you like to change your accessories according to the seasons or for other occasions. These neutral colors are easy to work with and will match most things, compared to some of the other choices.
