How to Stay Disciplined with Your Cleaning Schedule

Staff Writer · Feb 1, 2010

Implementing a cleaning schedule is probably one of the best ways to ensure that you stay on top of your tasks around the house. Cleaning is usually not an enjoyable act, but more of an act that is done out of necessity. And, inevitably, if you do not stay on top of your chores, you will have one heck of a mess to clean up. Try using some of these ideas to keep yourself motivated and on track with your cleaning schedule.

Designate Cleaning Days

While you can save time and effort simply by picking up clutter everyday, it is probably not your dream to home from work everyday and scrub your floors for an hour. That’s okay. You don’t have to be a neat freak in order to keep a clean home. You simply have to save some time out of your week for cleaning days.

Try implementing a schedule in which you dedicate three days out of each week as cleaning days. If you prefer to do house cleaning on the weekends, try using Monday, Wednesday and Saturday as your cleaning days. The point is to keep yourself aware of what your tasks are around the home and to stick to them.

Likewise, if you can set aside some special cleaning time each week, you can cut your cleaning time down to just 30 minutes per day. However, if you leave your chores to only once a month, you could be looking at two or three day’s worth of cleaning.

Put Your Schedule on the Refrigerator

The refrigerator is a good place to keep all things important posted; like your cleaning schedule, due dates for bills and appointments.

You may not look on your nightstand every night or your desk everyday, but you will surely peruse the refrigerator at least one time each day to see what you have to eat. Using this tactic is a good method for sticking to a cleaning schedule because you are sure to see the schedule everyday. This will help to keep it in your mind that you have certain cleaning tasks that need to be done around your home.

Motivate Yourself

Cleaning can be a bore, but you will feel much better relaxing in a home that is clean. But even the task of cleanliness can get daunting if you begin to feel like all you do is clean, rather than enjoy yourself.

Because cleaning can cause you to feel annoyed and irritated, try to motivate yourself with some means of a reward. You can make a deal with yourself that for every week in which you complete your cleaning chores, you buy something nice for yourself. You can buy a magazine, a dinner at a nice restaurant, some extra lottery tickets or whatever it is that you like to do in your spare time.

The point is to keep the task of cleaning fun and rewarding. Buying yourself something to reward your hard work can help keep you on the track of doing it repetitively.
