Minimalist Design: Good for the Eyes and Wallet

A minimalist design equals simple living, which means you’ll save money with this decorating style. Some decorating styles center on fluff, and the more textures, collectibles, colors and furniture you add, the better. However, a minimalist design is clean and orderly, and it maximizes the space you have. Only the essentials are included, which means converting to or starting out with a minimalist design is one of the least expensive decorating options.

Limited Use of Texture

It costs more money to add texture as a decorative element to your apartment. For example, textured wallpaper costs more than regular wallpaper because of the process required to add beads, crystals, sand or other elements. In a minimalist design, the use of texture is limited, and it’s not used on walls. Even the fabric you use around your apartment is available in various textures, which can impact the price. Silky and smooth fabrics are key to a minimalist design, which is good for the eyes and your wallet.

No Clutter

An apartment that incorporates a minimalist design must not be cluttered. Not having a cluttered environment is what makes this design look so orderly. When you first move to an apartment, it can be expensive to “fill it up” with things, such as artwork, furniture and accessories. You may have been taught that you need those things to make your apartment look like someone lives there. By the time you’re done making your space have a “lived in” look, you end up spending more money than you ever needed to. A minimalist design approach discourages spending this way. Focus on what you really need to function in the space and only include those items. If you want to display art or collectibles, choose one or two pieces at most to make a statement. You can also transform your computers and electronic devices that you’ll use anyway into art pieces, by purchasing colors or styles that will accentuate a room.

Simple Furniture

You don’t need to buy expensive furniture for a minimalist design, which is another way you save money with this decorating style. Simple beds and headboards, a smaller number of chairs and sofas (only what you absolutely need) and fewer end tables are required. Compare that to other designs that require more of these, and the use of expensive materials, and you’ll gravitate towards the minimalist design in order to save money and space.

Fewer Rooms

A minimalist design is a reflection of a life dedicated to living as simple as possible. If you’re serious about it, you may decide to downsize to a smaller apartment with fewer bedrooms and bathrooms. For example, you might look for an apartment with a large open living area and use minimalist design elements to carve out a portion of it for your home office, instead of renting an apartment with an extra bedroom for the same purpose. You’ll save money because an apartment with fewer rooms will cost less.

Consider a minimalist design when looking for ways to save money with decorating. Acquiring less will not make your apartment look “less livable.”
