Moving day is hectic and messy. However, the key to making your move smoother is to keep the movers happy. Happy movers mean a better, more cautious move. Creating happy movers is not difficult, but can make all the difference for your move.
Be Polite
Your attitude on moving day will set the tone for the entire move. The movers and driver will emulate your mood, which is why it is imperative that you exude a positive, upbeat attitude. Greet your movers and invite them inside. While this may seem a strange move since you have hired them for a job, this move will create a friendly atmosphere. Introduce yourself to each employee.
Offer Food
While you assuredly have all of your goods, including food, packed, offer the employees food and provide cool drinks. The food you provide can be simple or even ordered and delivered. You do not have to provide breakfast, but should the move extend through lunch or dinner, an offer of sandwiches or pizza will be appreciated.
Tip for Good Service
Service employees often survive off tips. While you do not necessarily need to tip the customary fifteen to twenty percent of your move as that could be quite expensive, ten or twenty dollars per employee is more than generous. Do not hint that you plan on tipping as doing so might appear snooty. Being open, generous and offering food will hint that you plan on tipping.
Be Informative
While the employees have been given the information of your move, they most likely know very little other than the generalities. After their arrival, give a quick tour of your residence, pointing out any items that should be handled gently. Of courses, do not be rude or abrupt in your instructions, but instead approach it with the air of being helpful.
Lead the Way
The trip to your new residence can be difficult. You can make it easier by politely instructing the driver to follow you during the trip. During the drive be careful of not losing the van by driving slowly, not running any yellow lights and signaling when turning. Showing the way will reduce the amount of time for your move and reduce the driver’s stress.
Be Prepared
The biggest problem for movers is when the customer is not ready upon their arrival. Make sure to pack everything prior to the move date. Do not be afraid to ask for help from your friends and family and do not try to be too organized a packer, remember that everything can be organized upon your arrival. If there is no way you can be prepared by the move date and are able to push it back, be respectful and reschedule.
Remember that moving is stressful for everyone, including the moving company employees. Often, the employees are moving heavy or fragile items, placing an enormous amount of stress on their bodies and minds. Being polite, open and offering refreshments will go a long way in ensuring your move is safe and easy.
