Moving to Another State: Why It’s Beneficial to Visit the Area during the Worst Weather Season

Staff Writer · Dec 15, 2010

Moving to another state is extremely exciting; however, it also means entering into an area which is relatively unknown. Choosing to move to another state is a very big decision that requires not only identifying the area in which you would like to live, but making sure you like the state in general. A major component of being happy where you live is the weather. Whether hot or cold, visiting the area during its worst weather can teach you if you will be happy in the area.

The Worst Types of Weather

The first step in choosing another state in which to live is to determine the area’s normally weather patterns throughout the year. Identify if the state has a rainy, snowy, hot or other extreme type of weather and, if so, the time of year it normally occurs. The times of extreme weather are the times in which you want to visit the area.

Allergy Seasons

If you have a sensitive nose and throat, you may also want to check out whether the state has any high allergy seasons and, if so, what the allergens are. This will help you identify whether the state will affect your physical health by exacerbating any known allergies. Possibly, you might want to visit the area during its allergy season to see if you are affected by pollens in the air. This is also important for individuals suffering from asthma.

Why You Should Visit

No place is perfect; and while you may have idolized the area you are relocating too, you must be aware of its downsides. Visiting the state during its worst weather will let you know if you are able to live there at the time when its downsides are most visible and impactful. During this visit, you will also be able to view how other residents deal with the extreme weather. If you cannot find any enjoyment in the heat or snow, you might want to consider a different state. If, however, you can enjoy the state at its worst, you most likely will be happy in your new residence.

Things to Check Out

The worst weather will provide you with a glimpse into what the area will be like during that time of year. In an extremely hot or cold area, check out whether the majority of homes and apartments have heaters and air conditioners, whether the units are window-mounted and what type of energy they use to function: gas or electricity.

In such an area, moreover, you should check the access to transportation and parking. Garage parking may be necessary in both climates to protect your vehicle and make it more easily usable; outdoor parking may become a problem in snowy areas if the landlord is slow to plow or shovel the snow. Many of these same considerations will be important for rainy areas. Urban residences may have different issues to check into than rural ones, such as the access to public transportation and state response to snow or rain emergencies.
